Lady Mohawks Rebound after First Conference Loss
The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball squad split conference matches last week, posting a lopsided victory at Cedar Ridge on Tuesday and then dropping their first conference set of the season at CRA on Thursday. The team was back in action Tuesday, Oct. 8, against Hoxie and rebounded posting a win in three straight games.
Last Tuesday the Mohawks visited Cedar Ridge and swept the day, posting conference wins for both the junior and senior teams.
In the junior high match the Lady Mohawks took the match in two sets, 25-9 and 25-13. On the day the girls had a combined 14 aces, 11 kills and 12 assists to post the win.
The senior Lady Mohawks also rolled in their match with Cedar Ridge, winning in three straight games by scores of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-9. As a team the Tribe combined for 20 aces, 27 kills, 36 digs, 23 assists and 3 blocks.
Individually, Lady Mohawks Bre Chandler and McKenzie Hopkins had 7 aces each; Kacey Crossfield had 10 kills, Jessie Mallard and Chandler each had 5 kills; Erica Vancil finished with 13 digs and Taylor Davis had 22 assists in the win.
But, Thursday evening the Tribe visited Crowley's Ridge Academy and dropped their first conference match of the year to the Lady Falcons.
CRA came out hot, and despite a strong comeback by the Tribe, took the first set by a final of 27-25. The Falcons then posted a decisive 25-21 victory in set two, and edged the Mohawks 25-18 in the third to take the match.
On the night Crossfield had 10 digs and 7 kills, while Vancil had 10 digs and Davis finished with 19. Jessie Scheffler was strong at the net with 6 blocks and 3 kills, while Hopkins finished with 3 blocks and 6 kills and Mallard had 4 kills and 4 digs in the loss.
Despite the loss to CRA, the Tribe remained in first place in 3A-Northeast play as the Lady Falcons have two losses in conference.
Tuesday night the Tribe hosted Hoxie and swept the night, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-22. Kacey Crossfield led the team with 15 kills, 5 digs and 5 aces in the win. Meanwhile, Taylor Davis had 20 assists, 8 digs and 4 aces; Erica Cluck-Vancil had 14 digs and McKenzie Hopkins contributed 8 kills and 7 blocks.
Following Tuesday night's home set against Hoxie the Tribe was slated to go on the road, as they'll visit Walnut Ridge Thursday, Oct. 10. Then, on Monday, Oct. 14 they're slated to visit Greene County Tech for a non-conference set and the next day, Tuesday, Oct. 15, they'll host Harrisburg in conference play at PHS.
