Lady Mohawks Host Paragould
The Piggott Lady Mohawks wrapped up the 3A-Northeast conference title last Tuesday evening with a tough win over Harrisburg. Monday night the Tribe hosted the Lady Rams of Paragould for a post-season tune-up and fell in straight games. The Mohawks are slated to end their regular season this Thursday, Oct. 24, with a home set against Brookland and will be playing in the first round of the state tournament next Tuesday at Harrison.
The Lady Mohawks controlled their own destiny last Tuesday night, as they took on the Lady Hornets of Harrisburg with the conference title in the balance. And, despite a good stand by the Harrisburg squad, the Tribe prevailed.
The Hornets came out hot in game one, and took the contest by a final of 22-25. But, the Tribe responded in the second set, and although they had to go to the tiebreaker, took the win 26-24. In game three the Hornets again responded, and took the set 23-25 to gain the advantage.
But, the Tribe rose to the occasion and took game four by a final of 25-14, and then held on in the tiebreaker game to take the match 17-15.
On the night Kacey Crossfield had 19 kills and 10 digs while Taylor Davis contributed 29 assists. The Tribe combined for 46 kills in the match, with McKenzie Hopkins leading the way with 9, while Jessie Scheffler had 7 and Jess Mallard finished with 8. Hopkins also had 9 of the team's 12 blocks on the night.
The 5-A East conference champion Paragould Lady Rams visited PHS Monday night, and swept the Tribe in three straight. The team, which is coached by a contingent of former Lady Mohawks, took the first set 25-19, the second 25-15 and held on to notch the win 25-23 in the nightcap.
Leading the way for the Tribe once again was Kacey Crossfield with 8 kills, while Jessie Scheffler had 5 kills, Taylor Davis finished with 14 assists and McKenzie Hopkins had 4 blocks in the non-conference loss.
The Lady Mohawks will host the Brookland Lady Bearcats Thursday evening at PHS for senior night, with the senior "B" and "A" squads in action. By virtue of their district championship, they're scheduled to play at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 in the first round of the 3A state volleyball tournament at Harrison against the third place finisher from 3A-West, the West Fork Tigers. With a win they'll advance to the second round, and will be playing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30. That contest will pit the Tribe against the winner of the Green Forest-Paris game, both second place finishers in their districts. A win in the second round will earn the Tribe a spot in the semi-finals, and they'll be playing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. Others in the lower half of the bracket include Fountain Lake, Bergman, Atkins and the Lady Hornets of Harrisburg.
Those matches are being hosted by Alpena High School, and are being played at the Harrison Parks and Recreation Complex. The state 3A championship match will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Russellville High School.
