Mohawk Tennis Team in State Tourney Play
Members of the Piggott Mohawk boys tennis team were still in the hunt for a state title Monday afternoon, following the first day of the 3A state tennis tournament at Burn's Park in North Little Rock. But, Tuesday their quest ended with losses, resulting in a third place finish for the Tribe.
Singles player Quinton Mauldin advanced with wins in the first two rounds, while the doubles team of Will Jett and Trevor Grubb also advanced to the third round and were in action Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the lone Lady Mohawk to advance to the state tourney, Katelynn Woodard, fell in her first round set.
Third seeded Quinton Mauldin won his first match Monday over Joseph Stem 6-4 and 6-4, then defeated Michael Davis of Fountain Lake 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3. He was slated to play Conner Noland of Episcopal Collegiate in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, eighth seeded Jacob Wellman won his first round match over Hennelly Irvin of Mt. View 6-0 and 6-1. He then dropped a tough second round loss to Jack Nolan of Episcopal Collegiate 4-6 and 2-6.
Tuesday Mauldin lost to second seeded, and eventual state champion, Conner Noland of Episcopal Collegiate 4-6 and 3-6. He then bounced back against Grant Honeycutt of Bergman 8-3 to finish in third place overall.
In girls singles action the Lady Mohawk's Katelynn Woodard entered the tournament as the 11th seed, and lost to the sixth seeded Allison Eubanks of Drew Central 0-6 and 2-6 to end her season.
In boys doubles action the second seeded team of Trevor Grubb and Will Jett beat Payne and Tywater of Fordyce easily, 6-1 and 6-2. The duo then took on the team of Reppard and Stowe from Benton Harmony Grove and took the win 7-5 and 6-2.
The other Mohawk boys doubles team, Hunter Holcomb and Teddy Arriola, started the tournament as the 13th seeded team and fell to the fourth seeded Ziegler and McDonald of Smackover 0-6 and 1-6.
But, Tuesday they fell to third seeded Tabor and Morrison of Bergman 6-2, 6-7(4-7) and 6-7(3-7). The Mohawk duo was then upset by fourth seeded Ziegler and McDonald of Smackover 8-9(8-10).
Team standings following the first day of competition had the Mohawk boys team second, as Episcopal Collegiate was in first with 7 points. Meanwhile, Piggott had 5, Bergman had 4 and Smackover had 2 points heading in the second and final day of play. At the completion of the second day Episcopal had extended their lead to 19 points, while Bergman squeezed into second with 6 points and the Mohawks finished with 5 to take third place honors.
In recognition of their play Quinton Mauldin, Trevor Grubb and Will Jett were all named All-State.
