Lady Mohawks Advance in State Volleyball Tourney
The Piggott Lady Mohawks advanced into the second round of the state 3A volleyball tournament at Harrison Tuesday with a win over West Fork. By virtue of their district championship, the Lady Mohawks took on the third place finishing West Fork Lady Tigers of 3A-West in the first round and won in five tough sets.
The Lady Mohawks came out hot in their first round state tourney game, and took the first set by a score of 25-20. But, the Lady Tigers responded in set number two and held on to post the win 25-23.
The third set also went to the squad from West Fork, by way of the tiebreaker, as they scratched out a 28-26 win to take a 2-1 advantage.
But, the Lady Mohawks were not to be denied as they pushed back to tie the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.
And, in the tiebreaker fifth set it was a dominate Mohawk performance, as they closed out the match 15-8.
Leading the way was Crossfield with 19 kills and 10 digs in the victory. Meanwhile, Davis finished with an astounding 35 assists and recorded 9 digs; Jessie Scheffler had 8 blocks and 3 kills at the net; Erica Cluck-Vancil had 29 digs and the remaining senior, Bre Chandler, finished with 4 aces, 10 digs, 5 kills and 5 assists. Rounding out the offensive attack was McKenzie Hopkins, who continued to shine at the net with 15 kills and 5 blocks.
The Tribe is now set to play at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 30, and will take on Paris. Earlier Tuesday the Paris squad eliminated Green Forest in three straight.
The other members of 3A-Northeast split in the first round, with CRA falling to Jessieville and Hoxie upsetting St. Joseph and Harrisburg beating Atkins to advance.
With a win in the second round the Mohawks will advance to play at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.
