Peewee Cougars to Play in Championship Game
The Peewee Cougars' sixth grade team advanced to the NEA Youth Football League Championship with a 32-14 victory over Wynne Saturday in Manila. The Rector squad is returning to the title game for the second straight season and is 6-2 overall.
The Cougars struck first in Saturday's contest, scoring on a two-yard blast by Max Ford. Shannon Patterson carried in the two-point conversion, placing Rector in front, 8-0. Quarterback phenom Parker Bucy sparked the drive with a big 37-yard carry to bring the ball down to the Wynne 11-yard-line.
Wynne answered on their following drive, breaking away on a 40-yard touchdown. Rector stopped the try for two, holding on to an 8-2 advantage.
The Peewee Cougars made it two-for-two with a follow scoring drive. Kyle Akin moved the chains on a big 35-yard pick-up for the boys in blue. Adam Romine made a spectacular running catch of a Bucy pass for a 35-yard touchdown. Romine kept the jets on after the catch to hit the end zone unencumbered. Bucy ran in the conversion on a keeper, making it 16-6 in Rector's favor.
Wynne answered with a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play of their following drive. The try for two was good, cutting the Cougars' lead to two points, 16-14.
The score remained 16-14 heading into the second half.
Rector added two more touchdowns in the second half to seal the contest.
Max Ford ran in a four yard touchdown to widen the Cougars' lead. Patterson juked a defender to get in for the conversion, leaving Rector in front, 24-14.
Ford pounded the ball in for another touchdown in the fourth, this time from 15 yards. Patterson added two more on the follow-up, setting the final in place.
The Cougar defense stood strong, stopping the high-powered Wynne offense in the second half. A pair of defensive gems came in the form of a fumble recovery by Lastin Lindsey and an interception by Ford. Both killed key Wynne drives.
The Peewee Cougars will face Earle in the championship beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at McCrory.
