The Lady Cougars improved to 9-0 with a 53-22 drumming of the hosting Armorel Lady Tigers Monday night.

Corning Win

The cross-county matchup between Rector and Corning was an instant classic this past Thursday night at Corning, with an extra frame of play needed to determine a winner. The Lady Cougars emerged with an 88-79 overtime win.

Corning took a 40-24 lead into intermission with momentum firmly belonging to the Lady Bobcats. Rector's Gunn responded in a big way. Gunn, who notched a three-point basket in the first frame with no other scoring in the half, lit up the scoreboard with an astounding 34 points in the second half and overtime to propel the Lady Cougars to victory.

"It's tough to score 34 points in a game," RHS coach Matt Dean said. "It's something else to score 34 points in a half. That was just an outstanding performance."

Gunn switched to attack mode in the second half, driving to the basket with abandon. Her efforts paid off, with the tough senior creating good shots and forcing Corning to foul her regularly in the hopes of stopping the onslaught. Gunn finished 14 of 22 at the line, with all her attempts coming after halftime.

Rector received nine points from Gunn and six points from junior Brittany Fair in the overtime frame to pull away from Corning.

Gunn led all scorers with 37 points on a career night. Anna Blackshare notched 16 for the Lady Cougars. Also scoring for Rector were Haney 9, Smart 8, Fair 8, Jones 7, Ellis 2 and Lenae Haley 1.

The Junior Lady Cougars fell to Corning, 49-13.

Corning led throughout: 16-13; 25-6 and 47-13.

Matison Dean led Rector with six points. Clark added four points. Jackie Beck, two points, and Mylessa Gant, one, rounded out the Junior Lady Cougars' scoring.

The Lady Cougars defeated Pocahontas 53-37 Nov. 12 at Rector.

Pocahontas led 10-9 after the first frame, but Rector closed the second quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 26-16 lead into halftime. Three-pointers by Gunn and Ellis spurred the run, with Gunn adding a bucket on a drive to the hoop. The Lady Cougars led 35-22 heading into the final frame.

Gunn led the way with 25 points in the win. Also scoring for Rector were Haley 6, Ellis 6, Blackshare 3, Jones 3, Scott 3, Hill 3, Lynch 2 and Fair 2.
