Christmas Celebration, Parades Set in Rector and Piggott

Thursday, November 28, 2013
Piggott High School AP Art students will once again take part in the annual Christmas parade, to be held Saturday, Dec. 7 in conjunction with Christmas Fest.

The holiday season rolls in with full force next week, with the Rector Christmas Parade on Thursday and the Piggott Christmas Fest and Parade Saturday.

Santa Claus, floats, beauty queens, antique cars and a variety of other entries will be featured in the annual Rector Christmas Parade set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5.

The annual parade also coincides with the illumination of Christmas lights and decorations throughout the town.

The Rector Area Chamber of Commerce will present awards of $100 to the winning float design and $25 for the best sponsored Christmas decoration in conjunction with the celebration.

The parade will begin at the corner of Third and Main Streets in downtown Rector, and conclude at the community center, where a big Christmas reception for the entire community will take place.

Santa Claus will be present at the reception to hear Christmas wishes, and free refreshments will be served.

This year's program will feature performances by the Rector High School band, as well as the faculty and staff choir. Rector Elementary second and third graders will be singing Christmas Carols as a very special addition to the program, under the direction of music teacher Melinda Van Aalsburg.

The annual Piggott Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Fest is set for Saturday, Dec. 7 with activities held around the downtown square. The local holiday celebration will be going on throughout the day on that date, and offers a full schedule of fun and festivities--including the annual Christmas Parade at 10:30 a.m., giveaways and a special concert at the gazebo.

As in years past, the 2013 edition of the Piggott Christmas Fest will feature a variety of vendors set-up around the courthouse lawn. And, downtown businesses will be open and offering special sales and promotions throughout the day. There will also be free toy drawings, free hot dogs for those 16 and younger and at 1 p.m. Brian and Terri Kinder will perform at the gazebo in a special performance sponsored by Piggott State Bank.

"We currently have over 30 vendors signed up for this year's Christmas Fest," noted chamber secretary Jan Glover. "But, we've got plenty of room for more." Those wanting more information on vendor space, or any of the activities associated with Christmas Fest, may contact Glover at the chamber office in the depot.

And, kids ages 14 and under are welcome to enter a drawing for two bicycles, a boy's and a girl's, to be given away at 3 p.m.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be in their house following the parade, and everyone is invited to bring their camera for photos.
