The Rector Lady Cougars celebrated New Year's Eve with a bang, winning the Girls' Division I championship in the 2013 NEA Invitational Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 31 at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro. Rector met 2A-3 rival Marked Tree in the championship game, marking the third straight year the two teams met in the tourney final. RHS won the contest, 57-56, in a hard-fought contest between two of the top teams in Class 2A.

The Lady Cougars trailed by one, 53-52, with just under a minute left in the contest. A timely three-pointer by Bailey Haney and a free throw each by Bekah Scott and Kendal Gunn perfectly meshed with tenacious defense to boost Rector to the victory. Marked Tree sank a three-pointer at the final buzzer to cut the Rector advantage to a single point, setting the final at 57-56.

The Lady Cougars defeated Marked Tree in the 2011 tournament before falling to the Lady Indians in the 2012 tourney final.
