Rector's Scott Heading "Down Under"
Kade Scott, a sophomore at Rector High School, will represent the North Central Conference Golf Team as one of two competitors from the state of Arkansas in the Down Under Sports Golf Tournament to be held along the Gold Coast of Australia in July. Kade, the son of Penny and Mike Scott of Rector, will be part of a group of 96 young golfers to participate in the international event which also includes locations in New Zealand and Hawaii.
Kade was first contacted about the opportunity this past November.
"I was excited," Kade said of being contacted by Down Under Sports. "At first, I didn't know if I'd be able to go. I talked to mom and dad, and they said it was a privilege to be asked to and that if I wanted to do this, then go for it."
The trip will consist of a total of nine days, seven days in Brisbane, Australia and one day of travel each way. While there, Kade will play in five tournaments over five days on some of the most breathtaking courses in the world, beginning July 4. The program also arranges for the young participants to enjoy their unique surroundings through special events, such as Animal Excursions, which will allow the visitors to see some of Australia's unique wildlife firsthand.
"They have different things like that lined up for us," Kade said. "It's going to be a lot of fun and a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing."
Kade has been researching some of the courses upon which he will have the opportunity to play. There have been a few surprises, thus far.
"I was looking at the courses online and I saw a "Beware of sharks" sign by some of the water on one course," he recalled. "That was kind of crazy. I can't imagine seeing a sign like that on one of the courses over here."
This past high school season marked the second straight year Kade reached the state tournament. This season also saw him selected as an All-State golfer by the Arkansas Activities Association, marking him as one of the best young golfers in the state.
These efforts helped Kade stand out and receive the invitation from Down Under Sports. While his selection is indeed a special honor, it's not without expense. Kade and his family are currently raising funds to cover the $5,000 enrollment expense for travel and lodging, as well as funds for additional expense. To offset this, Kade is currently seeking sponsors within the community in addition to selling Down Under Sports t-shirts. Those interested in sponsoring Kade or purchasing a shirt may contact Penny Scott at (870) 595-4782 or Rector High School at (870) 595-3553.
