Winners Named in Local Spelling Bees

The local spelling bees were held in the past week, with the winners advancing to the county-wide spelling bee to be held later this month in Corning.

Sharon Mann, left, and Paula Blackwell, right, representatives of Piggott State Bank, presented plaques and monetary awards Jan. 8 to the top finishers in the Piggott School District Spelling Bee. Top spellers included, from left, alternate Catie Hill and finalists Maggie Williams, Avery Little and Louis Lin. Piggott State Bank has sponsored the Piggott event for many years, and provided cash awards to all participants, which included the top spellers in fourth through eighth grades.

Meanwhile, winners were also named at Rector as they held their spelling bee as well.The top participants in the Rector School Spelling Bee, held Jan. 7 at the RES multi-purpose room, are, from left: Adam Romine, alternate, sixth grade; Sydney Wofford, third place, eighth grade; Sarah Willis, second place, eighth grade and Jarek Ellis, first place, eighth grade.

The top three competitors from Rector, Piggott and Corning now advance to the Clay County Spelling Bee to be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Corning High School auditorium.
