Cougars Stumble in 2A-3 Action

Lawson Ford surges inside the reverse layup in action with Augusta Friday.

The Cougars dropped back-to-back conference contests this past week, falling to Augusta Friday and Marked Tree this past Tuesday, both games occurring at Rector.

"We need a big win," RHS coach Matt Mills said after the disappointing losses. "This group is working as hard as any group of kids I've had, but we're just not putting it all together. It's not translating to the floor. We might shoot well one night, but not be able to hold on to the ball, then move the ball well, but not make our shots. We've got to put it all together at the same time if we're going to beat any of these teams that are pretty good."

Friday night, the Cougars fell to the Augusta Red Devils, 53-45.

Rector entered the final quarter down just three points, 32-29, but would come no closer, as the taller Red Devils were able to consistently find good shots inside. An offensive rebound and stickback by Nick Hardin brought RHS back t within four, 49-45, with 38 seconds on the clock, but Augusta responded with two drives to the hoop, the second coming in transition after a steal, to set the final in place with 20 seconds left in the contest.

Rector led 12-7 after the first quarter, but trailed 25-23 at the half.

Seniors Reed Weber and Alec Scott both had strong performances for the Cougars. Weber worked inside and hit the glass for RHS, netting 18 points on the night and often battling two Red Devils on the boards. Scott slashed to the hoop with success, netting 17 for the Cougars. Also scoring for Rector were Adam Dinkins 3, Danny Hager 3, Lawson Ford 2 and Hardin 2.

Augusta had three players score in double figures on the night: KeAndre Munns with 16 and Anfernee Neal and Jaylon Brown had 11 points each.

The Junior Cougars rolled to a dominating 50-21 win over Augusta.

Easton Tracy led all junior high scorers with 14 points in the victory. Also scoring for Rector were Case Watson 8, Matt Hynds 6, Hunter McNeely 5, Brandon Shelton 5, Kirk Beshears 4, Dustin Carter 4, Frank Herrera 2 and Sam Simmons 2.

"That was a nice win in junior high," Mills said. "Those guys have all worked hard and that win shows just that it's working. This group learns something and gets better every time they step on the floor."

Marked Tree Loss

The Cougars fell to the visiting Marked Tree Indians, 58-43, on Jan. 14.

Rector led 10-6 after the first frame, but Marked Tree's D'Angelo Griffin and Kedrick Tayor sparked an Indian surge in the second quarter. Marked Tree led 24-14 at intermission and 41-27 going into the fourth quarter.

Scott and Ford finished with 10 points each to pace Rector in the contest. Also scoring for the Cougars were Dinkins 8, Hager 6, Hardin 5, Weber 2 and Huston Highfill 2.

Tyler and Griffin finished with 20 and 14 points, respectively, for MTHS. Daniel Rucker added 11 for the Indians.

The Junior Cougars fell to Marked Tree in their meeting, 43-24.

Rector trailed throughout: 10-8; 24-16 and 31-19.

Simmons paced the Junior Cougars with 11 points on the night. Also scoring for Rector were Watson 6, Tracy 5 and Carter 2.

The Cougars are set to welcome McCrory beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. Friday night's contest will serve as homecoming for Rector, with festivities being held between the junior and senior high games. The Cougars are set to visit Cross County beginning at 6 p.m. Jan. 28.
