Lady Cougars on a Late-Season Roll
The Lady Cougars relied on second half bursts to add two more wins in the past week, further strengthening their position as the number two team in Class 2A.
Monday night, the hosting Lady Cougars picked up their intensity on the defensive end, taking command en route to a 64-49 win over the Riverside Lady Rebels. Rector allowed the Lady Rebels just 16 points in the second half, turning around what had been a nip and tuck contest. Rector led by four, 18-14, after the first stanza and just one, 34-33, at intermission, but turned up the heat on their press in the second half to significantly hinder the Riverside offense. While buckets became increasingly difficult for the visitors, RHS was able to add more punch to their offense by scoring in transition off of beneficial turnovers.
Three Lady Cougars reached double figures in scoring on the night, with Anna Blackshare's 21 leading the way. Kristen Smart and Kendal Gunn finished with 13 points each for RHS. Also scoring for Rector were Bekah Scott 8, Bailey Haney 6 and Cheyenne Ellis 3.
Kenzley Wilson, 15 points, and Chelsea Nichols, 12, led Riverside in the loss.
The Lady Cougars improved to 23-4 overall and 9-2 in conference 2A-3 with the victory.
The Lady Cougars shifted their offense into high gear in the third quarter, outpacing the visiting Augusta Lady Red Devils, 69-39, as part of a four game Friday night in Rector.
The Lady Cougars led 15-10 after the first frame and 25-20 at intermission, but came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, outscoring Augusta 34-6 in the period. The clock kept rolling throughout the entirety of the fourth frame as the mercy rule went into effect.
Rector seemingly connected from everywhere on the floor in the pivotal stanza, burying a pair of three-pointers, scoring off of turnovers, sinking free throws and scoring on offensive rebounds.
Blackshare led Rector with 20 points in the win. Gunn added 18 for the Lady Cougars. Also scoring for RHS were Ellis 8, Brittany Fair 6, Smart 6, Marla Crancer 4, Haney 3, Scott 2 and Lenae Haley 2.
