Piggott Fire Department Benefits From State Grant

Recently the state distributed $244,000 in grant funds to 14 rural communities in Arkansas, with a portion of the funds earmarked for the Piggott Fire Department.

The monies were distributed by virtue of the Fiscal Year 2014 Cycle 1 funding, through the Arkansas General Improvement Funds Grant Program.

The grants were handed out by Governor Mike Beebe, State Senator Robert Thompson and Department of Rural Services Director John Andrews at a ceremony held Friday, Jan. 10 at the Paragould Chamber of Commerce.

Among the grants approved was the application by the Piggott Fire Department in the amount of $30,000. The funds are to be used to purchase a new fire service equipment vehicle, which will replace the current unit which has fallen into disrepair.

On hand to accept the grant check were Piggott Fire Chief Bradley Scheffler and Assistant Chief Brian Haley.

The Department of Rural Services works in partnership with the Arkansas Rural Development Commission to administer the Arkansas General Improvement Funds Grant Program. Incorporated cities and towns and unincorporated communities in rural areas of less than 20,000 in population are eligible to apply for assistance through the mayor or county judge's office.
