Clay County Under Burn Ban

Monday, January 27, 2014
Piggott and St. Francis firefighters battle a grass fire Sunday afternoon north of the fairgrounds. The fire was one of three in the Piggott area on Sunday.

As of 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014 Clay County joins others regional counties under a burn ban. Judge Gary Howell issued the burn ban effective immediately at that time. It will remain in effect until conditions improve. Luckily, scattered rain showers are forecast for later in the week.

As a result of the dry conditions, firefighters from across the region spent much of Sunday battling grass fires, including three reported in the Piggott area. The issue is not only compounded by the recent dry weather, but also by the cold dry air and high winds.

Everyone is reminded of the prohibition against open burning during the ban. And, smokers are urged to be extra careful concerning cigarette butts during these dry times.
