The Piggott Lady Mohawks should be enjoying the break due to the bad weather, after playing three tough sets last week in conference action. Tuesday, Jan. 28 they hosted Rivercrest, Friday night they visited Harrisburg and Saturday morning they traveled to Hoxie to make-up a set postponed from earlier in the season. The girls teams were slated to join the boys squads for a set at Earle Tuesday evening, but due to the weather those games were called and will likely be rescheduled.

Rivercrest

The Tribe hosted the tough Lady Colts of Rivercrest last week at PHS and were swept. In the senior contest the visitors jumped out to an early lead, then cruised to a 70-32 victory. Despite the fact that 12 of the Lady Mohawks scored on the night, the Colts shot to a 22-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and built on that margin through the next two frames. Late in the contest the Tribe did make a run, outscoring the Rivercrest squad 11-8 in the fourth but it was too-little, too-late.

Pacing the Lady Mohawks on the night were Sydney Tarno and Bailey Pollard with 5 points each, while McKenzie Hopkins and Quest Emerson finished with 4 points each. As a team the Tribe converted on 7 of 11 free throw attempts in the loss.

Meanwhile, the junior girls dropped their contest to the Colts 46-15, despite shutting out their visitors in the first quarter 5-0. The Rivercrest girls then found their groove, scoring in double figures in the remaining three quarters to post the conference win.

Leading the way for the Mohawks was Grayson Murray with 8, while Colby Crossfield finished with 4 and Emilee Seegraves had 2 points in the loss. As a team, the junior Lady Mohawks were 11 of 23 from the free throw line. Jordan Elder led the Lady Colts with 14.

Harrisburg

The girls teams traveled to Harrisburg Friday, Jan. 31 for a conference set with the Lady Hornets and dropped both contests.

In the senior game the two teams played even through the first half, but the hosts pulled away late to post the 76-66 conference win. Scoring by quarters had the Lady Hornets up 15-13 after one, but the Mohawks responded in the second with a 24-22 tally, sending the two squads into the locker room at the half knotted at 37-37.

But, the hosts came out strong in the third quarter and took the frame 23-15, and followed that up with a 19-14 fourth quarter to post the 10 point win.

Hopkins and Tarno led the way for the Tribe with 13, and Bre Chandler also scored in double figures with 11. On the game, the Tribe converted on 7 of their 11 free throw attempts.

As for the junior girls, they dropped their contest to the Lady Hornets by a final of 50-24, paced by Crossfield with 8 and Murray with 6 points.

Hoxie

Saturday morning the girls squads made the trip to Lawrence County to wrap up the season series with the Lady Mustangs, and dropped both games.

In the varsity contest the Lady Mohawks ran out to an early lead, and were up 7-4 by the end of the first quarter. But, Hoxie responded in the second with a 23-13 advantage to erase the lead and take a 30-17 lead into intermission. The hosts also outscored the Tribe in the third and fourth quarters, taking the frames 21-8 and 14-7 as they posted the conference win.

Tarno had the hot hand for the Mohawks with 13 points, Chandler finished with 8 and Micah Hobbs had 7 in the loss. As a team the Lady Mohawks were pounded on the boards, notching only 4 rebounds on the game.

In the early contest the Junior Lady Mohawks dropped their game 47-24, despite 10 points from Reagan Ralph. Rounding out the top scorers for the Piggott girls were Murray with 6 and Crossfield with 4.

As a team, the Lady Mohawks were 5 of 10 from the charity stripe in taking the loss.

As mentioned, both the junior and senior girls teams were slated to travel to Earle Tuesday, Feb. 4 for a quad set with the boys teams but due to the weather those games will be rescheduled.

The weather has also resulted in re-scheduling this week, as Thursday night's home games with Manila have been postponed. Instead, the Lady Mohawks will join the boy's teams in hosting the Lions on Friday, Feb.7 at PHS. The quad-set will begin at 4 p.m. with the junior girls, followed by the junior boy's contest. Afterward senior night activities will be held for both the Lady Mohawks and the Tribe. The girls team will then take on the Lady Lions, with the boy's varsity contest as the nightcap.

Meanwhile, the junior girls are scheduled to take part in the junior district tournament at Hoxie beginning Saturday.

Tuesday, Feb. 11 they are slated to host the Lady Bobcats of Walnut Ridge at PHS and will then wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 13 in a set with the senior boys team at Rector.

The 3A-3 senior district tournament is being held at Harrisburg, and is set for the week of Feb. 17 to 22.
