Lady Cougar Showdown with Marmaduke Up in the Air

Thursday, February 6, 2014
The Lady Cougars and Lady Greyhounds battled in a memorable contest earlier this season at Maramduke, but winter conditions have delayed the anticipated rematch originally scheduled for Monday at Rector.

Plans to reschedule the Rector and Marmaduke basketball games from Monday and Tuesday at the RHS gym for Wednesday were canceled due to winter conditions. At this time, no further announcements have been made regarding potential rescheduling. Any announcements concerning the schedule will be posted to cctimesdemocrat.com as soon as they are made available.

It was business as usual for the Rector Lady Cougars at the start of this past week, but bad news soon hit the number two team in Class 2A and their fans. RHS posted an important conference victory over East Poinsett County, but suffered a major blow when senior point guard Anna Blackshare went down to extensive knee injuries. The latest reports indicate Blackshare tore her MCL, ACL and meniscus, which is expected to leave the talented young lady on the sideline as the Lady Cougars eye a postseason run.

Rector topped EPC, 75-41, Thursday night in Lepanto. The Lady Cougars jumped out early and never looked back, leading after each break: 22-5; 32-21 and 56-31.

A trio of seniors paced RHS on the evening, as Kendal Gunn, 14 points, Vanessa Jones, 11 points, and Kristen Smart, 10 points, each reached double figures in scoring. Also scoring for the Lady Cougars were Bekah Scott 9, Blackshare 8, Bailey Haney 5, Harmony Brown 5, Marla Crancer 4, Cheyenne Ellis 3, Lenae Haley 2, Tori Hill 2 and Colby Lynch 2.

EPC was led by 10 points each from Synteria Ward and Sydney Jones.

Rector improved to 26-5 overall and 12-2 in conference 2A-3 with the victory.

The Lady Cougars are slated to visit Buffalo Island Central beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, unless weather conditions require rescheduling. The senior girls are slated to host Piggott beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 in a night which will also feature the senior high boys' teams.

The Junior Lady Cougars fell in a tight game with EPC, 15-14. Rector led 7-2 after the first frame and 11-7 after the first half finished. EPC held the Junior Lady Cougars scoreless in the third to take a 12-11 lead into the final frame.

Matison Dean led Rector with six points on the night. Dominique Coln and Hailey Hilfiker added four points each for the Junior Lady Cougars.

The Junior Lady Cougars are set to begin district tournament play at Marmaduke beginning Feb. 10. Seedings and scheduling for the tournament are not yet finalized.
