Lady Cougars Drop Postponed Contest to 'Hounds

The Lady Cougars dropped a heartbreaker in a pitched battle with the Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds Saturday afternoon in Rector, 50-48.

The game was a long-awaited matchup, with fans of both teams packing the RHS gymnasium. Originally scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3, snow and ice resulted in numerous delays for the players and supporters.

Rector led by as many as 10, 14-4, early in the first quarter before Marmaduke went on an 8-2 run over the final four minutes to cut the Lady Cougar advantage to six, 18-12, heading into the second stanza.

Rector led by just three points, 27-24, at intermission.

Sidnee Bopp, Madison Price and Shelby Blackburn got the Lady 'Hounds off to a good start in the third, as MHS was able to take its first lead in the game. Rector fought back to tie and briefly reclaim the lead, 36-34, with just over two minutes remaining in the third on a fast break layup from Bailey Haney off a Kendal Gunn steal and dish. Bekah Scott got the run started with one of two at the line before adding a trey. Gunn hit a deep three-pointer before stealing the ball and starting the go-ahead break. Marmaduke made five of six free throws in the final 1:25 of the third to take a 39-34 lead.

The Lady Greyhounds led by as many as six, 45-39, in the fourth, but the Lady Cougars managed to come up with a basket just when the visitors seemed poised to secure the game. Gunn hit a free throw and a triple to pull within a basket, 45-43, with 3:08 left, but Bopp sank two at the stripe with 2:36 left to push the Marmaduke lead back to four, 47-43. Cheyenne Ellis slide in for a layup at the 2:16 mark, to make it a single possession contest once again, 47-45. Bopp answered with a drive with 1:57 remaining, as Marmaduke went ahead, 49-45. Gunn fired back, making an and-one layup and free throw with 1:45 left to cut the lead to a single point, 49-48, with 1:45 remaining. Marmaduke burned the clock, but an Ellis steal returned the ball to the Lady Cougars with 49 seconds on the clock. The possession ended with an airball three-point attempt, which Marmaduke rebounded, having controlled the glass throughout the contest. A quick Rector foul resulted in a one-and-one attempt by MHS' Allison Hampton, The first free throw missed with Rector securing the rebound, but the outlet pass bobbled out of bounds, giving possession back to Marmaduke. Rector sent Madison Price to the line with 18 seconds to play, where she made one of the double bonus attempts, giving MHS a 50-48 advantage. Rector brought the ball back down the court before calling a timeout with 4.6 seconds left in the contest. Marmaduke appeared to have stolen the ball, but play stopped with under two seconds remaining. Officials reset the possession with Marmaduke inbounding the ball under the Rector basket and time expiring.

Gunn led all scorers with 25 points in the loss. Also scoring for Rector were Scott 8, Ellis 7, Bailey Haney 4, Kristen Smart 2 and Brittany Fair 2.

Bopp paced Maramduke with 18. Also scoring for the Lady 'Hounds were Madison Price 9, Allison Hampton 9, Blackburn 7, Cally Price 3, Cally Burgess 3 and Jamie Clayton 1.

Rector fell to 27-6 overall and 13-3 in 2A-3, finishing second in the conference to MHS.

Marmaduke won the junior girls' game, 48-8.
