The Rector Fire Department received an alert on the fire at 11:40 p.m., and responded to the scene in mere moments. Upon arrival, large flames were witnessed emerging from a window in the northwestern section of the home. The Greenway Fire Department joined the Rector volunteers, but the blaze was in an accelerated state, effectively destroying the home and the belongings inside. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the scene.

The report filed by the RFD noted occupants of the home gave statements regarding a domestic disturbance at the site, and that a person known to them was "responsible for the firebombing" at the scene. In addition, a partially melted gasoline container was found just outside the northwest window where the blaze was initially identified by firefighters. The RPD and Clay County Sheriff's Department were alerted, and apprehended Jackson after speaking with witnesses. Jackson at last report was still being held in the Clay County Detention Center.
