Junior Mohawk Track Team in Action

The Mohawk track teams were slated to be in action at Pocahontas last week, but due to the weather only the junior meet was held. But, the Piggott team made a good showing in both the track and field events in the meet, held Tuesday, April 1 at Pocahontas High School.

Taking first place, and setting a new personnel best, in the shot put was Nate Mallard. Just an eighth grader, young Mallard put the shot a distance of 45 feet and easily beat his nearest competitor.

Meanwhile, the 4x100 relay team brought home second place honors with a time of 49.6. Running legs for the relay squad were Justin Goding, Dakota Santos, Cade Harrell and Bret Fuller.

The Tribe also got a strong second place finish in the girl's 110 hurdles by seventh grader Sawyer Hendrix, as she continues to develop her track skills.

Taking third place in the 300 hurdles was Brandon Gilkinson with a time of 50.9. Meanwhile, Santos took third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 20.1.

And, the junior high distance program continues to show promise as Spencer Hardin took fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:30.

The junior squads were slated to be back in action Tuesday, April 8 at Pocahontas and members of the seventh grade team will compete in the Paragould Arnold Relays on Monday, April 14. The junior boys and girls will travel back to Pocahontas for a meet Tuesday, April 15 and will take part in the Paragould Junior Arnold Relays on Monday, April 21 and the Pocahontas Junior Redskin Relays the following day, Tuesday, April 22.

The 3A-3 junior district track meet will be held at Earle on Tuesday, April 29.
