Mohawk Track Teams in Action

All three Mohawk track teams have been in action in the past week, with the senior squad taking part in a practice meet last Thursday at Pocahontas, the seventh grade team competing in the Arnold Relays at Paragould on the same day and the junior team taking part in the Junior Arnold Relays on Monday at Paragould High School.

The action continues, with the Pocahontas Junior Redskins Relays scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 and the Pocahontas Senior Redskins Relays slated for Thursday, April 24.

In the senior team's practice meet last week the Tribe 4x800 relay team, which includes Lee Austin, Nathan Gookin, Brady McPherson and Bryan Samples, ran an 11:06. Meanwhile, in the 100 meter dash Piggott's Nick McKinnie ran an 11.3, while Bradley Stephens ran an 11.6 and Logan Dixon ran 11.8.

In the 1600 meter run Caleb Welborn ran a 5:42 while Lee Austin finished in 6:18.

Meanwhile, the Tribe 4x100 relay team of Stephens, Dixon, Nick McKinnie and Eli Smith ran a 46.6.

Landon Williams and Samples took part in the 400 meter run, and Gookin also ran in the 800 meters.

Meanwhile, McKinnie ran a 23.1 in the 200 meter dash, while Stephens had a 23.5, Dixon a 24.5 and Smith ran a 27.1.

Austin ran a 13:30 in the 3200 meter run, while McPherson recorded a time of 14:41.

And, the Mohawk 4x400 relay team of Dixon, McKinnie, Welborn and Stephens ran a 3:52.

In field events, Seth Lacey took part in both the shot and discus, and John Daniel Beck also put the shot. Meanwhile, McKinnie took part in the long jump as the team continues to prep for upcoming action.

Arnold Seventh Grade Relays

The Mohawk seventh grade track team recorded several top finishes at the Arnold Relays, held Thursday, April 17 at Paragould High School.

The 4x800 relay team of Matt Bowers, Michael Salyards, Braden Ralph and Brandon Wellman took third place with a time of 11:32.58. Bowers also placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:48.4 and Wellman took fifth place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:18.20.

Also competing in the 1600 were Isaac Langley and Ralph, while Langley also ran in the 800 meter run.

The Tribe also took sixth place in the 4x400 with a time of 5:06.83 with Moore, Gage Dodd, Mason Tillman and Trey Gossett each running a leg.

Ralph had the top time for Piggott runners in the 100 meters, and also competing were Tillman, Gossett and Dodd.

Competing in the 4x100 relay were Ralph, Gossett, Austin Moore and Tillman.

In field events Salyards placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4 foot 6 inches. And, several Mohawks participated in the shot, discus and long jump but failed to place.

For the Junior Lady Mohawks, young Sawyer Hendrix continues to have a good season and made a good showing as she placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles.

Junior Arnold Relays

The junior Mohawk track teams visited Paragould Monday, April 21 and took part in the Junior Arnold Relays. Competing against 20 other schools the Tribe made a good showing, and brought home several ribbons.

The best finishes were both for fourth place, with one by the 4x400 relay team of Justin Goding, Elijah Bellers, Cade Harrell and Bret Fuller as they ran a 4:08.87--meanwhile Spencer Hardin took fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:39.87.

The 4x800 relay team of Bowers, Hollie, Clifford and Wellman also took sixth place; along with the 4x100 relay team of Gooding, Dakota Santos, Harrell and Fuller.

In field events the Mohawks got sixth place finishes from Nate Mallard in the shot, Brandon Gilkison in the discus and Fuller in the high jump.

The Tribe also competed in the 110 hurdles, 100 meter dash, 400 meter and 800 meter run, 200 meter dash and the 300 meter hurdles, but failed to place.

The Pocahontas senior Redskin relays will be held tomorrow, Thursday, April 24, for the senior squad. Meanwhile, the senior team will travel to Paragould on Monday, April 28 for the Senior Arnold Relays. Next Tuesday, April 29, the junior track meet will be held at Earle and the 3A-3 senior meet will be held on Thursday, May 1 also at Earle High School.
