Clay County Relay For Life Saturday

A scene from last year's survivor's walk at the Relay For Life, held at the Piggott Community Center.

The 2014 Clay County Relay For Life will be held beginning with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 3. This year the Relay For Life has a new home, as the event will be held at Liberty Park, also known as the Piggott Fourth of July Picnic Grounds. Most of the activities will center around the beauty revue stage, although if weather conditions don't cooperate the event will move to the local community center.

Saturday's fundraiser in support of the American Cancer Society is just one of a number of activities being held to raise money for the effort. Throughout the past year many of the local RFL teams have conducted a variety of fundraising efforts, with the proceeds benefiting the ACS and the battle against cancer.

Saturday night, April 26 the Emmanuel Baptist Church was the sight for the annual survivor's dinner, and this year's honored survivors were introduced. This year's honored survivors include Piggott Elementary School student Dayton Gilkison and a pair of two-time cancer survivors, Ann Reagan and Roseann Smith. They will have the honor of leading the first lap of the survivor's walk Saturday morning at the park.

The theme for this year's Relay For Life is carnival, and in keeping with the theme a variety of games, carnival food and fun is in store.

Following registration at the picnic grounds, the survivor's walk will get underway at 10 a.m. All cancer survivors are invited to come and be a part of the walk, along with their family, friends and supporters.

Activities will continue throughout the day, with the luminaria ceremony set to wrap things up at 6 p.m. Luminaria are sold each year in honor, or memory, of someone who has fought a battle with cancer. White luminaria are available for a donation of $5, while gold, purple or silver ones are available for a $10 donation. All proceeds benefit the Relay For Life, and the ACS.

Luminaria forms may be submitted to Susie Bowman, or may be acquired the day of the relay at the picnic grounds. Those wanting more information may contact Bowman at 870 598-3457.

Liberty Park is located one block south of East Main Street on South Moore Avenue. Again, in the event conditions are too wet the Relay For Life will be held at the Piggott Community Center on Highway 49, South.

Those wanting more information on the Relay For Life may contact Bowman, or Gary Laughlin at 870 634-6892.
