Softball and Baseball Postseason Update

The first round of district softball and baseball games were played Thursday afternoon, with second round action set for today, Friday, May 2.

The Piggott Mohawks advanced with a 6-5 win over Hoxie in the 3A-3 baseball district at Rivercrest, while the baseball Cougars fell 2-1 to Riverside in the 2A-3 at Lepanto. Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars advanced with a 7-2 win over the Lady Rebels of Riverside in their softball district, also at Lepanto, and the Lady Mohawks are scheduled to play Manila this afternoon in the first round of the 3A-3 district at Corning.

The Mohawks advanced over the Mustangs behind a strong pitching performance by Mason Rahn, who gave up only 6 hits while striking out 4. Pacing the squad at the plate was freshman Bret Fuller, as he went 2 for 3 and drove in three of the Mohawk runs. Meanwhile, Garrett Cook and Bryce Howard were both 2 for 4 in the win. With the win the Tribe advances to the second round, and a 4 p.m. start against the Manila Lions.

Meanwhile, the Cougars and the Rebels battled into the 8th inning Thursday afternoon, before Riverside got a walk-off single to take the contest 2-1.

Also at Lepanto, the Lady Cougars easily dispatched the Riverside softball squad by a final of 7-2. They will take on BIC at 4 p.m. this afternoon at Lepanto, followed by Marmaduke and Marked Tree in the late game. A win will also punch the girl's ticket for another trip to the 2A North Regional, being held at Pangburn.

As for the Lady Mohawks, they'll face the Lady Lions of Manila around 5:30 p.m. today, following the Hoxie-Osceola game at Corning. With a win they'll take on the top-seeded Rivercrest Lady Colts tomorrow, Saturday, May 3 with first pitch set for noon. A victory will also earn the Tribe another trip to the regional softball tournament, set for next week at Mt. View.
