Piggott Gears Up For Annual Car Show
Entries are still being accepted for the 16th annual Piggott Heritage Park Car Show, set for May 16 to 18, and organizers report this year's car show t-shirts will soon go on sale. For 2014, participants in the local car show will be competing for $1,000 in prize money including $250 each for ladies choice and people's choice and $500 for best of show.
T-shirts are scheduled to be on sale the week prior to the show for $15 each but the price will be $20 each on the day of the show. Those wanting to purchase a t-shirt in advance should visit the Chamber of Commerce office in the depot building.
The schedule for this year's show will kick-off the afternoon of Friday, May 16 with a "Wing Ding" chicken dinner courtesy of the Piggott First National Bank banking center. The dinner is for car show participants only, and will be served on the parking lot of the bank on East Main Street.
"The chamber would like to offer special thanks to First National Bank for their $1,500 contribution toward operations of the show and for hosting this year's Friday night wing-ding," noted Chamber President and car show chair Brian Haley. "We'd also like to offer our thanks to Rodney Rouse and his family for once again volunteering to prepare the pork steak dinners for Saturday afternoon's meal. This has saved us valuable dollars which may be put toward other car show expenses."
In conjunction with the show, the Piggott Lions Club will be holding a pancake breakfast from 6:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at the community center. Car show participants and the public in general, are invited to attend and enjoy all they care to eat for just a $6 donation.
Activities at Heritage Park will be going on throughout the day on Saturday, May 17 and will culminate with the popular cruise through town that afternoon. The day's schedule will also include games for the participants, and a variety of vendors will be set-up at the park as well.
Haley also noted the chamber has received widespread support from a number of sponsors for this year's event.
"The car show has become increasingly difficult to host, and without the continued support of area businesses it just would not be possible," he explained. "This year, in addition to advertising in local papers, we will be advertising on Clear 94 Radio during the week of the car show, with a live broadcast scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the show on Saturday."
But, Haley indicated organizers are still concerned with attendance, which has lagged the past several years. "We desperately need to increase our gate attendance and feel this may help to increase our attendance," he explained. "The radio broadcast will be sponsored by Treasure Chest, Helena Chemical, First National Bank, Hill Aviation, Baker Implement, Wrights Collision and SOS Customs."
Prior to the remote broadcast, and afterward, Patrick Patterson will be operating the public address system at the park.
Additionally the trophies for this year's car show are sponsored by Tim Holland and Holland Leasing, Los Compadres Restaurant, Piggott State Bank, Hog Wild BBQ, Hobb's Exterior Solutions and several local elected officials. Haley also noted local professional photographer Frank Staples would be on hand throughout the day, and photographing the event. Haley also noted numerous local businesses and individuals had donated items for the car show door prizes as well.
Saturday night will also feature live music from Patrick Patterson on the gazebo as the cars and trucks will be on display under the lights. There will also be a 50's and 60's dance contest held Saturday night, sponsored by Piggott Realty. They'll be awarding a $15 prize for first place, $10 for second and $5 for third place in the competition.
Gospel music will be featured at the park beginning around 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 18 and afterward the awards and trophies will be handed before the official closing of the show for another year.
The entry fee is $40 per vehicle, and $30 each for any additional vehicles belonging to the same owner. Organizers note award plaques will be given to the first 150 entries and the show is open to vehicles of all years, makes and models.
