Piggott High School graduation held

With a packed house in attendance, the members of the PHS class of 2014 await the start of graduation ceremonies Friday, May 16.

The Piggott High School gym was near capacity the evening of Friday, May 16, as the class of 2014 took part in commencement exercises. A total of 68 seniors took part in graduation ceremonies before the large crowd, which included family, friends, staff and administrators.

The PHS band performed Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" as this year's class entered the gymnasium and took their seats. The first speaker of the evening was 2014 valedictorian, Hunter Holcomb.

Following the valedictorian's address, senior members of the Piggott High School band joined their fellow musicians in performing several special pieces under the direction of Jeremy Wortham.

Up next was the salutatorian's address from Chris Lee.

Scholarships and awards were then distributed to the class members, with the first two presented by former school board president Shawn Parker, of Piggott State Bank. Parker was on hand to present the two annual Gaylon Lawrence Memorial Scholarships, which this year went to Katie Foster and Peyton Haley.

PHS counselor Amber Harrell, assisted by Faith Conley, handed out the remainder of the scholarships to the class members. The scholarship recipients, and their awards, were as follows--

Nick Haywood received a $250 Eulalia Fitzgerald BETA Club Scholarship, a $15,000 Hendrix College Academic Scholarship, $5,000 Hendrix Odyssey Distinction Award, $1,500 Hendrix College Award, $5,100 Hendrix Priddy Scholarship, Arkansas State University Arkansas Promise Scholarship, $2,000 Arkansas Academic Challenge, Top Ten Award and was named an Honor Graduate.

Shana Edwards was recipient of a $250 Eulalia Fitzgerald BETA Club Scholarship, $100 MASH Scholarship, $3,000 Arkansas Lottery Scholarship, $50 Art Club Scholarship and $400 Piggott Elementary School Faculty Scholarship.

Julianna Jorden received the Business Award, Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship and a $250 "Alumni Gives Back" given by Mike Roeder class of 1963.

Hannah Wagster received a $1,000 Clay Conservation District Scholarship and the Donald Johnson Memorial Scholarship. She was also recipient of a $275 Alumni Gives Back award given by Terry Pollard class of 1975 and Keith Woolverton class of 1973.

Taylor Davis received a $1,000 Clay Conservation District Scholarship, a $50 Art Club Scholarship and was an Honor Graduate.

Along with the Gaylon Lawrence Memorial Scholarship, Peyton Haley received a $1,000 Clay Conservation District Scholarship, a $16,000 Harding University Academic Achievement Scholarship, $14,000 Arkansas Challenge Scholarship, FBLA Competitor Scholarship and was an Honor Graduate.

Austin Engle was recipient of a $1,000 Clay Conservation District Scholarship, Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, one ear Scholarship to Arkansas State University Newport, $50 Art Club Scholarship, $250 Alumni Gives Back award in memory of loving husband and father Robert Wade "Bobby" Shanklin (class of 1961) given by wife, Nancy Shanklin (class of 1963) and daughter, Allison Shanklin McBride (class of 1983) and was named as an Honor Graduate.

Jessie Scheffler received a $1,000 Clay Conservation District Scholarship, $250 Alumni Gives Back Award by Michael and Tina Bare, class of 1967, and was an Honor Graduate.

Austin Murray was recipient of a $1,000 Clay Conservation District Scholarship, $250 Mohawk Booster Club Scholarship, Top 10 Award, $250 Alumni Gives Back award given by Paula Blackwell in memory of Paul O'Dell 1940 Mohawk Football, $250 Alumni Gives Back in memory of loving husband and father Robert Wade "Bobby" Shanklin (class of 1961) given by wife, Nancy Shanklin (class of 1963) and daughter, Allison Shanklin McBride (class of 1983) and was an Honor Graduate.

Jerica Tate was awarded a $500 Clay County Arts Council Scholarship, the $400 Adam Brown Memorial Scholarship, the Art Award, Three Rivers College Music Scholarship, $100 AP Art Scholarship and the FBLA Volunteer Scholarship.

Jessica Burke was recipient of a $500 Clay County Arts Council Scholarship and awarded a $100 AP Art Scholarship.

Will Jett was awarded the annual $250 Kent Greene Memorial Scholarship, a $250 Alumni Gives Back award, given by Linda Deck (class of 1960) in memory of Mike Deck and was an Honor Graduate.

Veronica Welty received the $500 Lions Club Scholarship, with an additional $500 contributed by First National Bank of Piggott.

Chris Book received a $500 J.B. Swift Memorial Scholarship, a $2,400 per year ASU Band Scholarship, Top 10 Award, $1,000 Alumni Gives Back award given by Harry Gambill, class of 1963, and was an Honor Graduate.

Miranda Millsap was recipient of a $400 Adam Brown Memorial Scholarship.

Aleah Davis was awarded the Eastern Star Lodge #207 Scholarship, Crowley's Ridge College $1,500 per year Scholarship, $100 Art Club Scholarship, $400 Piggott Elementary Faculty Scholarship and was named as an Honor Graduate.

In addition to the Gaylon Lawrence Memorial Scholarship, Katie Foster received the English Award, Spanish Award, $2,000 MFA Scholarship, $2,000 Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, $300 FBLA Leadership Scholarship, $14,000 Lyons Honor Day Scholarship, $400 Piggott Elementary Faculty Scholarship,Top 10 Award and was named an Honor Graduate.

Bree Chandler was recipient of the Family and Consumer Science Award, a $2,000 a year Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, $1,000 Federal College Work Study, $12,200 Lyon Honors Day Scholarship, Top 10 Award, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Jim Metz class of 1967 and was named as an Honor Graduate.

Chris Lee was not only salutatorian, he also received the Social Studies Award, an Arkansas State University Spirit Scholarship, Top 10 Award, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Thomas Renfro class of 1962 in memory of Eulaia Fitzgerald and was named as an Honor Graduate.

Hunter Holcomb was this year's valedictorian, and also received the Math Award, Honor Graduate, $1,000 Farm Credit Scholarship, $2,000 Arkansas State University Arkansas Promise Scholarship, $3,000 Arkansas Academic Challenge Lottery Scholarship, $1000 Piggott High School Class of 1970 Scholarship and a Top 10 Award.

Amber Evans was recipient of the Spanish Award, Top 10 Award, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Debbie Haywood class of 1967 in memory of Carol Brandon Raybon and was named as an Honor Graduate.

Nathan Blakeley received a Black River Technical College Academic Distinction Scholarship, Three Rivers College Incentive Scholarship and was named an Honor Graduate.

Aaron Meadows was recipient of a $56,000 Arkansas State University Scholar Scholarship,$14,000 Arkansas Challenge Scholarship, Top 10 Award, $1,000 Alumni Gives Back given by Johnny Staples class of 1964 and was named an Honor Graduate.

Michelle Haley was awarded a $6,720 Arkansas State University Pride Scholarship, $200 E.C. White Memorial Scholarship, $2,000 per semester Arkansas Challenge Scholarship, $2,400 Arkansas State University Band Scholarship, $500 Alumni Gives Back given by Roger and Suzie Morris in memory of Barbara and Marshall Wheeler and Clifford Cole, was named an Honor Graduate and received the $250 Dr. B.B. Layl Memorial Scholarship.

Gary Petago received an Arkansas State University Arkansas Promise Scholarship, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Johnny Hanna class of 1960 in memory of Ralph Park and was named an Honor Graduate.

Hunter Neeley was recipient of a $2,000 per year Arkansas State University Arkansas Promise Scholarship, a $14,000 Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, $250 Joann Barlow Memorial Scholarship and was named an Honor Graduate.

Jacob Richardson was this year's recipient of the $1,000 Ryan Pounds Memorial Scholarship, $500 Matthew Brown Memorial Scholarship, one year tuition paid at ASU-Newport in Jonesboro and was named an Honor Graduate.

Katelynn Woodard was awarded an Academic Challenge Scholarship, $10,000 Commitment to Excellence Scholarship to University of the Ozarks, Top 10 Award, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Thomas Renfro class of 1962 in memory of Ralph Park and was named an Honor Graduate.

Kacey Crossfield was recipient of a $14,000 Arkansas Lottery Scholarship, $100 Art Club Scholarship, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Linda Lingle class of 1965 and was named an Honor Graduate.

Amber McNew received a $3,500 Midwest Achievement Award to Southeast Missouri State University in Kennett, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Molly Kircher class of 1960 in memory of Juanita Goforth-Litzelfelner and was named an Honor Graduate.

Jacob Lockard was awarded an Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, Go Opportunities Grant, $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Mike Roeder class of 1963 and was named an Honor Graduate.

Trevor Grubb was recipient of a $50 Art Club Scholarship, $250 Alumni Gives Back in memory of loving husband and father Robert Wade "Bobby" Shanklin (class of 1961) given by wife, Nancy Shanklin (class of 1963) and daughter, Allison Shanklin McBride (class of 1983) and was named an Honor Graduate.

Dakota Burr was recipient of a $250 Alumni Gives Back given by Paula O. Blackwell, class of 1962 and was named an Honor Graduate.

Emily Midkiff was recipient of a $250 Alumni Gives Back award given by Linda Newkirk, and was an Honor Graduate.

Lee Austin was a recipient of a $250 Alumni Gives Back award given by Frank Staples, class of 1967, and Adam Staples, class of 1997.

Samanda Pence was the recipient of a $250 Alumni Gives Back award given by Larry and Lynn Featherston, class of 1966, and was named an Honor Graduate.

Cheyenne Richey received a $250 Alumni Gives Back award in memory of Joder Litzelfelner and was named an Honor Graduate.

And, Samatha Starnes was recipient of a $250 Alumni Gives Back award given by Elaine Mistele, class of 1963, in memory of Arlet and Wilma Dover and was named an Honor Graduate.

Following the distribution of scholarships and awards, Superintendent Charlie Powell presented the class of 2014 for graduation. The diplomas were then handed out to class members by school board president Julie McMillon, and board secretary Jeff Benbrook, with assistance from PHS principal Barry DeHart.

Afterward the members of the PHS class of 2014 joined together one last time to sing the Piggott High Alma Mater, and took part in the traditional throwing of the mortar board hats.

The assembled class then exited the gymnasium for the final time, as the PHS band performed the recessional.
