Gerald M. Morris
Gerald M. Morris, 80, of Piggott, Ark., passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
He was born on August 8, 1933, in the Lone Holly Community, south of Rector, Ark., and was the son of the late D.M. "Buster" and Bessie Marie (Ray) Morris.
He was united in marriage to Mitzi Lou Fleeman for 22 years and to this union three sons were born. Mitzi preceded him in death on April 22, 1973. On March 1, 1974, he was united in marriage to June (Toombs) Jones and she preceded him in death after 36 years of marriage.
Gerald was a longtime member of the First General Baptist Church in Piggott, Ark., where he served as Choir Director for many years. He served on various mission trips and was instrumental in starting a mission house for children in Honduras. Gerald also enjoyed singing quartet with his three brothers over the years.
He was a successful businessman and was involved in many entrepreneurial ventures including Morris Farm Center.
Gerald was currently serving his twelfth year as Mayor of Piggott, and served on many committees for the Arkansas Municipal League including: Executive Committee, First Class Cities Advisory Council, Investment Committee and District Court Task Force. He also was a member of the Northeast Arkansas Economic Development Coalition, Northeast Arkansas Chief Elected Officials (NEACEO), Arkansas Byways Association and General Baptist Investment Fund. Gerald was on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District, East Arkansas Planning Development District (EAPDD), Piggott Community Hospital, and General Baptist Nursing Home. Gerald was in continual support of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum. He was also a Mason and a member of Piggott Masonic Lodge #545.
Everyone leaves their footprint in this world and he left his on all seven continents.
Survivors include his three sons: Ed Morris and wife Patricia, Alan Morris and wife Pam and Roger Morris and wife Suzie all of Piggott, Ark.; a daughter, Kathy Ballard and husband David of Piggott, Ark.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; three brothers: James Morris and wife Wanda of Piggott, Ark., Irvin Morris and wife Sue of Paragould, Ark. and Gary Morris and wife Sue of Lafe, Ark. a very loving and close friend, Linda Vogel of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014, in the First General Baptist Church in Piggott, Ark., with Gary Morris and Chris Brantley officiating. Burial is in Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers are Paul Morris, Jonathan Morris, Chris Morris, Steven Saffell, John Kimes, Kyle Phillips, James Engle, Frank Thrasher and Sonny Potts. Visitation will be held beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and continue until 3 p.m. at the church. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, Ark., is in charge of the arrangements.
