Piggott Summer Tennis League Tourneys Held
The Piggott Summer Tennis League wrapped-up play recently, with the final three of four end-of-season tournaments.
A total of 10 players took part in the senior boys division, for those in grades nine through 12. Two divisions played to determine champions, and set ranking for the tournament.
Jacob Wellman took the red division with a record of 4-0, with Quinton Mauldin taking second with a record of 3-1. Meanwhile, Shawn-Hudson Seegraves took first in the black division with a record of 4-0, while Caleb Higgins was second with a record of 2-2.
Two of the players, Nick Harris and Beau Jett, were out of time for the tournament and unable to participate. To fill out the bracket, Isaac Morris and Jackson Howell moved up from the junior division.
In the first round of play Wellman downed Howell 6-0, Higgins defeated McDaniel 6-1, Mauldin downed Morris 6-0 and Seegraves got by Cody Horn 6-0.
In semi-final action Wellman beat Higgins 6-1 and Mauldin downed Seegraves 6-3. Then, Seegraves edged Higgins 6-1 for third place, with Mauldin taking the win in the final over Wellman 6-2.
In the consolation bracket, McDaniel beat Howell, Horn defeated Morris.
A total of 12 took part in the boy's junior play, with three divisions taking part in the round-robin format to determine champions and rankings for the tourney. Taking the red division was Seegraves, while Morris finished second. Aden Baggett won the black division, with Jackson Howell finishing second while there was a tie in the white division between Kade Johnson and Aaron Mauldin.
In the championship tournament, Colton Higgins defeated Aaron Mauldin in the first round 4-2, Nick Helms downed Thomas Dotson 4-0, Max Guite beat Kade Johnson 5-4 (7-3 tiebreaker) and Tyson Peters beat Adam Fuller 4-1.
In the second round Seegraves beat Higgins 4-0, Howell downed Helms 5-3, Morris beat Guite 4-1 and Peters defeated Baggett by default.
Seegraves beat Howell 4-0 in the semi-finals, while Morris defeated Peters 5-3.
In the third place game it was Howell getting past Peters 4-0, while Seegraves took the title 4-0 over Morris in the championship set.
In the consolation bracket, Higgins defeated Baggett, Fuller got by Dotson, Johnson downed Helms and Mauldin beat Guite. Higgins went on to beat Fuller in the semi-finals, while Mauldin defeated Johnson. Higgins then took Mauldin 4-1 for the consolation final.
A total of eight players took part in the senior girls division, with Emilee Seegraves taking the divisional championship with a record of 4-0 and Sadie Sawyers coming in second at 4-1.
With a number of the senior division girls unavailable to play, five of the junior division girls moved up to round out the eight player bracket.
In the first round Seegraves advanced past Alyssa Blair 6-0, Brooke Roberts downed Destini Chase 6-3, Sadie Sawyers defeated Shi Higdon 6-0 and Macey Williams beat Haley Zacek 6-3.
In the semi-finals Seegraves got by Roberts 6-0 and Sawyers downed Williams 6-0.
This set up the third place game, with Roberts beating Williams 6-4. And, in the final it was Seegraves over Sawyers 6-0.
In the consolation bracket, Chase defeated Blair 6-1 and Zacek defeated Higdon 6-4. In the consolation final it was Chase over Zacek 6-3.
Coach Seegraves offered his thanks to all the players, and supporters of the summer league. He also voiced his appreciation to Piggott Parks and Recreation, Piggott State Bank and the Clay County Times-Democrat for their support. "Special thanks goes to Heather, Emilee and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves for helping with the matches," the long time PHS coach added.
