Lady Mohawk Volleyball Squad Preps for Season
Members of the Lady Mohawk volleyball team continue to prepare for the season at hand, as Coach Nikki Speer, and assistant Melissa Turner, enter their second year leading the program. Last year the duo was called into service at the last minute, filling a void created by the resignation of long time coach Melissa Williams as she took a job at Paragould. But, the coaches also inherited a strong team, and the squad went out and led the 3A-Northeast conference wire-to-wire, to take the district title outright.
This earned the Lady Mohawks yet another trip to the 3A state volleyball tournament, where they ground-out a five set win over the West Fork Lady Tigers in the first round. Then, in the second round they ran into eventual state finalists, the Lady Eagles of Paris. The match turned out to be an exciting five-game affair, but the Paris squad was able to hold-on to take it in the tiebreaker 15-8.
But, this year things are different, as the preparations for the 2014 campaign have been underway since the final whistle of the Tribe's loss at Harrison. Throughout the summer the team has been gathering for optional workouts, including water resistance exercises at the Piggott Public Pool. Last week they turned their attention more to the gym, and have been continuing to condition and work on game basics.
This season the Tribe also sees an adjustment in their conference, as Harrisburg has moved up to 4A and the 3A-Northeast Conference welcomes Cedar Ridge and Midland. They are joined by Crowley's Ridge Academy, Hoxie, Ridgefield Christian and Walnut Ridge.
But, the Lady Mohawks will also play several tournaments, and quality non-conference opponents, as they prepare for the post season battles.
The season will kick-off at home on Tuesday, Aug. 26, as the Lady Mohawks will host Pocahontas with all teams in action. First game is set for 4:30 at the PHS gym. The Tribe will be back in action on Thursday, Aug. 28 with a conference home set against Midland, and are then slated to be idle through the Labor Day weekend. They're return to action on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Ridgefield Christian. That weekend they'll also take part in a tournament at Harrison, and on Monday, Sept. 15 will host the Kennett Lady Indians in senior play.
The complete season preview, and schedule, may be found in the Aug. 20, edition of the CCTD.
