Mohawk Tennis Team Off to Good Start

The Mohawk tennis teams got their season underway on Monday, Aug. 25, with a set against the potent 2A Riverside Rebels and were swept on the day. But, both squads rebounded on Thursday, Aug. 28, and took non conference sets from both the Falcons of Crowley's Ridge Academy and the Brookland Bearcats.


The Tribe faced-off with the Riverside Rebels at Jonesboro last Monday, and both teams fell in their matches. In girls action the Lady Rebels, who finished third in the state last year in 2A play, took the set by a score of 4 to 3.

In singles play it was Piggott's Emilee Seegraves over two time all-state selection Chelsea Nichols 6-2. Meanwhile the Rebel's Natalie Milligan beat Sadie Sawyers 6-0 and Sydney Emery downed Devyn Staples 4-6. The Tribe's other singles win came as Meghan Woodard got by Kaitlyn Hale 8-6. Milligan, Hale and Emery were all also named as All-State selections last year for the Rebels.

In doubles play, Seegraves and Staples fell to Nichols and Milligan, the state runner-ups in doubles last year, by a final of 6-4. Meanwhile Sawyers and Woodard fell to N. Milligan and Ashlyn Snyder 6-3. The Tribe's lone doubles win came as Kourtney Chadwell and Brittany Austin got by Sydney Adams and Utley by a score of 6-4.

In boys play it was all Riverside, as they took the set 11-1. In sweeping singles play Devon Austin beat Quinton Mauldin 6-3, Kollin Stone downed Jacob Wellman 6-4, Gavin Stone got by Kyle Allman 6-1, Grant Mason downed Beau Jett 6-1, Coby Webb beat Carrington McDaniel 6-0, Jon Milligan beat Tyler Peters 6-0 and Braden Overman downed Alex Baber 6-0. For the Rebels, Austin, both of the Stones, Mason and Webb were all chosen as All-State performers last season.

In doubles play Mauldin and Wellman fell to G. Stone and Levi Reed, last year's state runner ups, 7-5, Jett and Nicholas Harris fell to K. Stone and Milligan, last year's third place state finishers, 6-1, Allman and Caleb Higgins fell to Luke Baker and Overman 6-2, Kaleb Chadwell and Noah Fuller were beaten by Dylan Austin and Zach Poe 6-0 and the lone Mohawk win came as McDaniel and Peters beat Jake Raby and Braxton Barnes 7-6 (2-5).


The Tribe rebounded to sweep 4A Brookland on Aug. 28, taking the girls match 7-5 and the boys set 4-1.

In girls singles play it was Seegraves over Madison Loflin 6-0, while Woodard downed Asthon Mooneyhan 6-0, Staples beat Taylor Reddick 6-2, Sawyers shut out Gracie Hyde 6-0 and Staples downed Haley Morgan 6-0. Brookland took three of the singles sets, as Cali Milligan beat Kourtney Chadwell 6-4, Brittini Huggins got by Haley Azcek 6-2 and Menly Long downed Brittany Austin 6-1.

In girls doubles play Seegraves and Staples beat Rachel Gramling and Bailey Lourein 6-2 and Sawyers and Woodard downed Taylor Hammet and Shelby Nettles 6-0. The Lady Bearcats took the other two, as Sawyers and Woodard fell to Hannah Lourein and Ally Loflin 6-4 and Chadwell and Zacek fell to Madison Crittenden and Elizabeth Mansfield 7-6 (4-7).

In boy's action, the Mohawks swept singles play with Wellman beating Kale Gardner 6-0 and Mauldin shutting out Seth Basinger 6-0. In doubles play it was Jett and Harris over Taylor Colbert and Tyler Cole 6-3, while Caleb Higgins and Carrington McDaniel downed Cody Crowell and Caleb Coleman 6-1. The Bearcats lone win came as Baber and Peters dropped their doubles set to Basinger and Gardner, in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (5-7).


The Mohawks also took on the Falcons of CRA on Aug. 28, and took both sets with the girls winning 3-0 and the boys taking their set 6-3. Last year both the boys and girls teams from Crowley's Ridge Academy were state tournament qualifiers.

In girls singles action it was Seegraves over Hannah Hutson 6-1, while Staples beat Karena Barlow 6-0 and Meghan Woodard got by Gracie Hicks in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6).

In boys singles play Mauldin beat Tyler Wood 6-4, Wellman downed Taylor Brown 6-0, Higgins got by Nathan Wheaton 6-0 and then beat Sean Jearnigan 6-4. The lone loss came as Harris fell to Levi Wallis 6-4.

In doubles play it was a 2-2 split, as the Mohawk's Peters and McDaniel beat Brown and Jearnigan 6-1 and Baber and Higgins downed Tyler Mobley and Colby Luke 6-2. Meanwhile, Wood and Wallis of CRA beat Jett and Harris 6-2 and Tyler Combs and Colton French beat Fuller and Chadwell 6-0.

With last week's action, both the boys and girls teams begin their seasons at 2-1.

The Lady Mohawks are scheduled to host the girl's team from Caruthersville in non-conference play Thursday, Sept. 4, at the municipal courts in Piggott. All teams will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 8, as they take part in a tri-match at Jonesboro with Harding Academy and the Westside Warriors.
