Junior Mohawks Eye Conference Title
Weeks of preparation will finally come to fruition this week, as football season will get underway across Northeast Arkansas. The Piggott Mohawk junior team will kick-off their campaign Thursday evening at Westside, with the senior team visiting Marked Tree on Friday to begin their season. Both are familiar non-conference foes for the Tribe.
For the junior team, they'll look to a battle hardened bunch of freshmen who were pressed into action as eighth graders. The class, 14 strong, has good size and speed and is expected to lead the younger players as the Tribe will look to compete for a conference title.
"These guys have been rolling out early every day since we started back in early August," Coach Michael Harrell noted recently. "I'm so proud of the effort they've put in to preparing for this season."
This year's freshmen include Cade Harrell, Nate Mallard, Hayden Lemmons, John Jones, Dakota Santos, Elijah Bellers, Quentin Reeves, Dalton Morris, Corey Fuller, Alex Gibson, Devin Riley, Reagan Mayberry, Colton Dudley and Brandon Gilkinson.
They're joined on the roster by eighth graders Trey Gossett, Mason Tillman, Lane Buchanan, Luke Boyd, Dylan West, Luke Carpenter, Dylan Bellers, Gunner Shaw, Isaac Langley, Braden Ralph, Austin Moore, Austin Crawford, Logan Allman, Dominic Reagan, Hunter Clayton, Clayton Williams, Brandon Wellman, Noah Edwards, Jacob Scott and Homer Warbritton.
Following Thursday night's opener the junior Mohawks will return to the friendly confines of Parker Field, and will host Paragould on Thursday, Sept. 11, to wrap up non-conference play. They'll visit Corning the following Thursday, Sept. 18, will travel to Osceola on Thursday, Sept. 25 and will host Rivercrest on Thursday, Oct. 2. Cedar Ridge will visit Piggott on Thursday, Oct. 9, and the junior squad will make the long trip to Melbourne on Thursday, Oct. 16. The following week, Thursday, Oct. 23, Manila visits the Tribe and they'll close out the season at Hoxie on Thursday, Oct. 30.
All of the junior Mohawk games are preceded by a seventh grade game, with kickoff of the early contest set for 5:30 p.m.
