Cougars Hang Tough in Opener

Friday, September 5, 2014
The Cougars take the field prior to the start of Friday night's season opener at Temerian Field in Rector.

Varsity football made its return to Rector in powerful fashion as a hard-nosed effort by the Cougars served to excite a large, passionate crowd at Temerian Field Friday night. The Cougars held their own against a talented Patriot team from Palestine-Wheatley, but Rector would ultimately fall, 34-20, following a third frame surge by the visitors.

On pure effort, the Cougars were champions, though, and the reinvigoration of the program under head coach David Hendrix is already apparent. Excitement and hard work are the tools with which programs are built, and Friday night's effort looked to secure the early stonework in the foundation.

A full report of the contest will be available in the Sept. 10 edition of the Times-Democrat.
