Mohawk Tennis Teams Notch Victories
The Piggott Mohawk tennis team was in action last week, with the girls team taking on Caruthersville and both squads taking part in a tri-match at Jonesboro with Westside and Harding Academy.
The Lady Mohawks hosted Caruthersville on Thursday, Sept. 4, and dropped the match to the Lady Tigers 4-5. In singles action Emilee Seegraves beat Hannah Bishop, Devyn Staples downed Samantha Faulkner and Sadie Sawyers prevailed over Alexa Hays. Meanwhile, Meghan Woodard dropped her match to Kaielyn Akins, Kourtney Chadwell fell to Abigail Tarpley and Brittany Austin lost to Claire Young.
In doubles action Seegraves and Staples beat Bishop and Akins, while Sawyer and Woodard fell to Faulkner and Hays and Chadwell and Alex McDaniel dropped their set to Tarpley and Young.
The Tribe took on conference foe Harding Academy at Jonesboro on Sept. 8, and took both the boys and girls matches.
In girls singles play, Seegraves beat Nicole Swann, last year's district runner-up in singles, while Staples downed Haley Smith and Woodard beat Sydney McGill. In doubles action, Sawyers and Woodard downed Rachel Moore and Shelly Campbell, Chadwell and McDaniel got by Hope Taylor and Catherine Watkins while Chadwell and Austin fell to Katie Cox and Valerie Laferney.
In boys singles play, Wellman took his set from John David Stewart while Mauldin fell to Matt Francis, who finished eighth in the state last year, and Alex Baber fell to Mason Leferney. But, the Mohawks swept doubles play to take the match, with Jett and Harris prevailing over Luke Diles and Brock Henderson, Allman and Higgins beating Ross Eichhorn and Hayden Matthew and Tyler Peters and Carrington McDaniel beating Ben Moore and Brett Kernodle.
The Mohawks also took on the 4A Westside Warriors on Monday, Sept. 8, and took both the girls and boys matches.
In girls singles play it was Seegraves over Laura Olinger while Staples beat Rachel Johnson. Then, in doubles action it was Sawyers and Woodard over Olinger and Johnson.
The boys had similar success, and in singles play Quinton Mauldin downed Zac Passmore, Jacob Wellman beat Kiley Dement, Kyle Allman downed Matthew Funt and Caleb Higgins beat Zori Orozco. Meanwhile, in doubles play it was Beau Jett and Nicholas Harris over Passmore and Dement while Kaleb Chadwell and Noah Fuller fell to Funt and Orozco for the only Piggott loss.
The Lady Mohawks now stand at 4-2 on the season, and Seegraves has yet to take a loss. Meanwhile, the boys team has a record of 3-1.
The Mohawks are scheduled to host Paragould this Thursday, Sept. 11, and will travel to Jonesboro on Tuesday, Sept. 16 for a tri-match with non-conference Nettleton and Highland. They will then return to action on Thursday, Sept. 18 as they're slated to visit Corning. The match had originally been scheduled for Monday, Sept. 15, but has been rescheduled according to Mohawk Tennis Coach Paul Seegraves.
