Lady Mohawk Volleyball Team in Action
The Piggott Lady Mohawks have been very busy in the past week, as they posted a conference win at Jonesboro on Thursday, Sept. 11, over Ridgefield Christian, took part in the Ozark Slamfest at Harrison on Saturday and then hosted the Kennett Lady Indians in senior action Monday afternoon. The Tribe was also swept at Hoxie on Tuesday evening.
The Mohawks traveled to the south side of Jonesboro last Thursday and took on Ridgefield Christian in 3A-Northeast conference play.
But, the Tribe proved too much for their hosts, as they took the set in straight games 25-9, 25-16 and 25-5. Meanwhile, the junior girls dropped their set in two straight games 25-15 and 25-21.
The Lady Mohawk senior team, although they were short a few members, traveled to Harrison over the weekend and took part in the Ozark Slamfest tournament.
In the first match of the tournament the Tribe took on Alpena and fell 14-25 and 18-25.
But, the throughout the remainder of the tournament the Mohawks were stout as they took the next three matches to win the championship in the gold division. In the first set they beat Green Forrest 22-25, 25-24 and 15-12. They then downed Bergman 25-13, 24-25 and 15-11. And, in their final set they took the bracket championship over Valley Springs 23-25, 25-16 and 15-9.
"We were short a few girls due to some having to take the ACT, and one of the girls had a death in the family," noted Coach Nikki Speer. "But, we got some good game experience and saw some different opponents, so that was good."
Monday afternoon the Kennett Lady Indians visited PHS, and took on the Mohawks in senior "B" and varsity action. In the early set the Lady Mohawks jumped out and took the first game 25-18, but Kennett responded and two games two and three by scores of 18-25 and 12-15 over the Mohawks.
In the varsity set the Lady Indians took game one 14-25, then completed the sweep with scores of 19-25 and 15-25.
Tuesday evening the Tribe visited Hoxie and were swept on the night, posting their first conference loss. The Lady Mustangs took the set 25-21, 25-20 and 25-14.
The Lady Mohawks will be returning to the friendly confines of PHS, where they'll host the Lady Timberwolves of Cedar Ridge on Thursday, Sept. 18.
