Rickman/Brown Memorial 5K at Hand
Runners and walkers are invited to participate this weekend, as the annual Rickman/Brown Memorial 5K Run will be held. The fundraising event is set for this Saturday, Sept. 27, and for 2014 the proceeds will benefit PES student Dayton Gilkison and his family. Registration will be held beginning at 9 a.m. at the South Thornton Street Church of Christ in Piggott, with the run set for 10:00.
Dayton is a 10 year old fifth grader at Piggott Elementary School, and is currently battling T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Gilkison was diagnosed with the illness in August of 2013, and is currently undergoing treatment at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. He is a member of Sherry Wright's class, and his parents are Joey and Heather Gilkison. He's also supported at home by his sister, McKenzie, and brother, Trace. And, although he has shown improvements doctors say he may have to continue chemo-therapy treatments for the next two to three years.
This year the theme for the 5K event is a special one, as those who choose to participate will be painted in festive colors--if they choose. "This year's 5K will be a color run, so we're asking all the walkers and runners to wear a white t-shirt," noted organizer Karen Coomer. "But, if you want to run without being colored just wear a dark shirt and you won't be painted along the way."
Following the event lunch will be served to all the participants.
The entry fee for those wanting to run or walk is $10 per person, with a $5 entry fee for children and students. Donations of $20 are also being accepted from those who choose not to walk or run, and additional donations are always welcome.
The Rickman/Brown Memorial 5K is sponsored by the South Thornton Street Church of Christ, and the Piggott High School Basketball Boosters. The event is named for, and held in memory of, two former Piggott students who lost gallant battles with cancer--Erica Rickman and Matthew Brown.
