PHS Tennis Squads Continue Strong Seasons

The Mohawk tennis teams are beginning to wind down the regular season, and have remained busy in the past two weeks thanks to good weather. And, they've quietly made a good showing as well as the girls now stand at 13-5 on the season while the boys team is an impressive 15-1.

Pocahontas/Highland

The Mohawks visited Pocahontas on Sept. 23 and took on both the host Redskins and the Highland Rebels in boys and girls matches.

For the Lady Mohawks they only competed in doubles play against Pocahontas, with Emilee Seegraves and Devyn Staples winning their set, as did Sadie Sawyers and Meghan Woodard.

Meanwhile, Staples got the lone singles win against the Lady Rebels, with Seegraves and Austin dropping their sets. The Highland girls also took doubles play 2-1, with Seegraves and Staples notching the only Piggott win while Sawyers and Woodard and Chadwell and McDaniel fell in theirs.

In boy's play against Pocahontas the Mohawks won the day 4-2, sweeping singles action and then falling 2-1 in doubles play. Winners in singles play included Quinton Mauldin, Jacob Wellman and Caleb Higgins. Meanwhile, Tyler Peters and Carrington McDaniel won their doubles set, while the teams of Beau Jett and Nicholas Harris and Alex Baber and Noah Fuller dropped theirs.

The Tribe also swept Highland, with Mauldin and Wellman beating their singles opponents 6-0.

Caruthersville

The Lady Mohawks completed a home-and-away set with the Lady Tigers of Caruthersville on the road on Sept. 25 and took the set 5-4.

Emilee Seegraves, Devyn Staples and Meghan Woodard all had singles wins while Sadie Sawyers, Kourtney Chadwell and Britteny Austin dropped their matches. But, in doubles play Seegraves and Staples and Sawyers and Woodard posted wins, while Chadwell and Austin fell to set the final score.

Tri-Match

The boys and girls both notched wins over Harding Academy and Corning at a tri-match at Jonesboro on Monday, Sept. 29.

The girls team swept Harding Academy 4-0, with singles wins by Seegraves, Staples and Austin and a doubles win by Sawyers and Woodard. Meanwhile, the boys team also swept the Lions, 3-0, with Wellman notching a singles win and doubles wins by Jett and Harris and Kyle Allman and Higgins.

Meanwhile, the girls beat Corning 4-2, with Seegraves, Staples and Woodard sweeping singles play. In doubles action Sawyers and Woodard won their set, while Chadwell and McDaniel and Chadwell and Austin fell against the Lady Bobcats.

For the boys it was Mauldin and Baber with singles wins, while Peters and McDaniel won their doubles set although Jett and Harris and Chadwell and Fuller dropped theirs.

The Tribe was scheduled to host Corning on Tuesday, Sept. 30, and according to Coach Paul Seegraves the set scheduled for this Thursday, Oct. 2, at Pocahontas has been cancelled. He also reports the home set on Oct. 7, against Marked Tree has been called-off due to conflicts with the 2A district tournament. The Mohawks are scheduled to visit Corning on Monday, Oct. 6 to close out the regular season.

The Tribe is scheduled to take part in district tournament play at Allen Park in Jonesboro on Thursday, Oct. 9, and the state 3A tournament will be held Oct. 20 and 21 at Burn's Park in North Little Rock.
