PHS Tennis Teams Top Seeds in Conference
The Mohawk tennis teams wrapped up the regular season in the past week, sweeping cross-county rivals Corning in both a home and away set. With the wins both the boys and girls teams will enter this week's district tournament at Jonesboro as the regular season conference champs, and number one seeds.
The Mohawks hosted the Bobcats on Tuesday, Sept. 30, and swept both the boys and girls sets. The Lady Mohawks took their match 6-2, while the boys team won 5-1.
In girls singles play Emilee Seegraves, who has already secured the top seed in singles play for the upcoming district, beat Shayna Casinger 6-1, while Devyn Staples has nailed down the number two seed, and easily beat Sadie Couch 6-2. Meanwhile, Meghan Woodard beat Alison Landreth 6-1, Sadie Sawyers beat Journey Weaver 6-0 and Kourtney Chadwell downed Ashley Bettis 6-1.
In girls doubles action it was Sawyers and Woodard, the top seeded doubles set in district, beating Cassidy Mitchell and Madison Ermert 6-3, while Chadwell and Alex McDaniel fell to Jessie Guthrey and Caitlyn Carpenter 2-6 and McDaniel and Britany Austin fell to Maggie Couch and Kara Johnson 2-6.
Meanwhile, in boys singles play it was top seeded Jacob Wellman over Keifer Hartwig 6-0, while Quinton Mauldin has nailed down the number three seed in the upcoming conference tournament, and beat Clint Hovis 6-1. Rounding out the singles sweep was Alex Baber over Jay Leach 6-0.
In boys doubles play the duo of Beau Jett and Nicholas Harris, who are seeded number two in the upcoming district, fell to Hartwig and Hovis 0-6, while Tyler Peters and Carrington McDaniel beat Ryan Curtis and Ridge Briney 6-2 and Kaleb Chadwell and Noah Fuller beat Briney and Leach 4-2.
On Monday, Oct. 6, the Tribe traveled to Corning and wrapped up the season with a rematch with the Bobcats, taking both the boys and girls sets.
In girls singles play Seegraves beat Shayna Casinger 6-2, as she finished 15-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, Staples beat Jessi Guthrie 4-0, as she finishes at 19-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play. Staples then went on to beat Ashley Bettis 4-0 to complete the singles sweep.
In doubles play it was Sadie Sawyers and Meghan Woodard over Cassidy Mitchell and Madison Ermert 6-1. With the win Sawyers and Woodard finish at 14-6 overall, and 7-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, Chadwell and McDaniel fell to Couch and Carpenter 1-6, as they finish at 3-7 overall and 2-3 in conference doubles play.
Meanwhile, the boys got a singles win from Wellman over Hartwig 4-1, as he finishes the regular season at 15-1 overall and 5-0 in conference. Quinton Mauldin also posted a 4-0 win over Hovis, as he finishes at 13-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
In doubles action it was Jett and Harris over Hartwig and Hovis 6-4, as they finish at 8-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. Meanwhile, Kyle Allman and Caleb Higgins beat Ryan Curtis and Ridge Briney 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreaker as they move to 4-2 overall and 4-2 in conference. With the win they also nail down the number four seed in Thursday's tourney.
With the wins the Lady Mohawks are now 15-5 overall and6-0 in conference, while the boys team sports a 17-1 record overall and stand at 6-0 in conference play.
Following Thursday's district tournament, being held at Allen Park in Jonesboro, the Tribe will begin to prep for the 3A state tournament, set for Oct. 20 and 21 at Burn's Park in North Little Rock.
