Lady Mohawks Tops in Conference

The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball team rebounded from a recent loss at Hoxie, as they beat the Lady Mustangs in a home set on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The Tribe also notched a conference win over Cedar Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 2, and moved into sole possession of first place Tuesday, Oct.7 as they visited Walnut Ridge and swept the night. Meannwhile, the junior girls split their sets on the week.

Hoxie

After losing to the Lady Mustangs at Hoxie just two weeks prior, the Lady Mohawks have been on a roll and posted several wins. With that momentum behind them the hosted Hoxie at PHS last Tuesday, and powered to a four set conference win.

The Tribe came out strong in the first game and took it by a final of 25-13, but the Lady Mustangs put up a good struggle in game two as it went to the Lady Mohawks 25-21. Hoxie then battled to a 25-23 win to take game three, and send it to the deciding fourth. In the finale the Lady Mohawks were too much for their visitors, as they took the game and set 25-21.

Colby Crossfield was on top of her game against Hoxie, as she recorded 31 assists. Meanwhile, McKenzie Hopkins, MaKalia Beck and Jessie Mallard combined for 41 hits in the win.

Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks fell to the Hoxie squad 9-25 and 25-25 in their set.

Cedar Ridge

Both teams made the trip to Newark on Thursday, Oct. 2, and swept the Lady Timberwolves of Cedar Ridge.

For the senior squad they took the win easily, 25-4, 25-6 and 25-13. On the night the team combined for 27 kills, with Hopkins accounting for 10 and Beck contributing another 8. Meanwhile, Crossfield had 24 assists, and the Mohawks were an outstanding 68 of 70 in service.

With the wins over Hoxie and Cedar Ridge, the Lady Mohawk senior squad now stands at 13-3 overall and 8-1 in 3A-Northeast conference play.

Meanwhile, the Junior Lady Mohawks took their set 25-12 and 25-14. Leading the way was Emily Trosper with 8 kills, while Georgina Bautista, Sydney Risinger and Lexi Herren were a combined 23 for 23 from the service line.

Walnut Ridge

On Tuesday evening the teams visited Walnut Ridge, and swept the night. The senior girls secured first in conference with a hard fought win--25-20, 16-25, 28-26 and 25-15.

The junior Mohawks also beat walnut ridge 25-12 and 25-19.

The teams will compete in conference play this Thursday, Oct. 9, as they host CRA at the PHS gym. The junior high contest is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the senior match to follow. Supporters of the Lady Mohawks are encouraged to come out and back the team, and are asked to wear black as they'll be "Blacking Out" the gym for the Tribe.

The girls are also scheduled to be in tournament play this Saturday, Oct. 11, at Conway. Next Monday, Oct. 13, they're slated to host the Portageville Lady Bulldogs with the senior teams only in action, and on Tuesday, Oct. 14, Ridgefield Christian will visit PHS for the final conference set. The junior district tournament will be played Saturday, Oct. 18 and the senior team will close out the regular season with senior night on Tuesday, Oct. 21, as the Valley View Blazers visit PHS.
