Lady Mohawks Mark Senior Night, Set for State
The Piggott Lady Mohawks continue to prepare for next week's 3A state volleyball tournament at Harrison, and on Monday evening observed senior night for the members of the class of 2015. The senior night festivities had originally been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 21, against Valley View but were rescheduled. Last week's cancellation of the Portageville set allowed the Tribe to work-in another match, as former conference foes Harrisburg visited PHS. Late last week the Tribe also wrapped up conference play, as they pounded Ridgefield Christian in straight sets.
Meanwhile, the junior girls wrapped up their season, and took part in their district tourney on Saturday.
The Lady Mohawks visited the Warriors and swept the match in three straight on Thursday, Oct. 16. The Mohawks came out strong in the first set, taking it 25-7, and then powered to a 25-2 win in the second. They coasted through the third, taking the set 25-15, and the match as well. With the win they moved to 15-3 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
The Tribe marked senior night at PHS on Monday, Oct. 21, and recognized the seven members of the senior class on the volleyball team. The members of the PHS class of 2015 include Alexa DeHart, Quest Emerson, Jessie Mallard, Shelby Pruett-Chavez, Abby Holcomb, McKenzie Hopkins and Bailey Pollard. As it was pointed out during their introductions, the members of the team were conference champions their freshman year, and have participated in the state volleyball tournament each year of their high school careers.
In the early set the Piggott senior "B" team took their match in two straight games, despite having to come from behind in the late set. The Tribe took the first set easily, 25-10, but had to come from several points down late to take the second, and the match, 26-24.
In the nightcap it was a split-win for the Lady Mohawks as they took the match in three out of four. In the first game the Lady Hornets prevailed 25-12, but the Tribe responded and took the final three sets 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16 after adjusting to their opponent's game.
On the night the Mohawks got 16 assists from Colby Crossfield, while McKenzie Hopkins had 11 kills and 8 blocks and Jessie Mallard and MaKalia Beck had 6 kills each in the win.
The Lady Mohawks were scheduled to play one more tune-up match with Valley View on Tuesday, and will then continue to prepare for next week's 3A state tournament. The Mohawks will be playing at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Harrison and will take on the fourth place finisher from 3A-West. With a win they'll advance to the second round, and will be playing at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Another win will earn them a spot in the semi-finals, and a 4 p.m. start time on Thursday, Oct. 30. Winners in the semi-finals will square off in the state championship match at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
The Junior Lady Mohawks finished their conference schedule at Ridgefield Christian on Oct.16, and beat their hosts 26-24 and 25-16. This set their conference record at 6-5.
