Ruth Hazel Nichols
Ruth Hazel Nichols died peacefully at her home on October 27, 2014 following a lengthy illness.
Ruth was a tireless advocate for improving the understanding and treatment of major mental illness. She served as a community member on the Garland County Mental Health Association Board, and devoted many hours of her life to educating and lobbying legal professionals and legislators on mental illness while providing support to family members of those with mental illness.
She was born July 4, 1935, the daughter of the late Oscar and Ethel Parker of Piggott. She was also preceded in death two years earlier by a son, Bryan Nichols.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gerald Nichols; her daughters, Rhonda Nichols and Brenda Khyentse; a son, Doug Nichols; a grandson, Bryan Novais Nichols; a granddaughter, Brianna Nichols and her great-grandchildren Julian and Lucia Nichols. She was also survived by a brother, Dale Parker (Mary) and many devoted nieces and nephews. We love you forever.
Ruth's family and friends were her greatest joy and she will be deeply missed by those fortunate enough to have known and loved her. Many thanks go to the kind volunteers and staff of Hospice Home Care of Hot Springs.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Ruth's name to the National Alliance for Mental Illness or your state's alliance or Hospice Home Care noting the donations would be gratefully appreciated.
Interment will be Saturday, November 22, 2014 in the Piggott Cemetery.
