Mohawks Record First Win of Season
The Piggott Mohawks recorded their first varsity win of the new season Friday night, beating the Maynard Tigers 52-48 in a non-conference road game. The Tribe took advantage of a hot night by junior Brayden Brewer, as he led the team with 19, in posting the win. The Mohawk defense also weathered a 30 point onslaught from Maynard's Dakota Loggains, as they held on for the victory.
Coming off a disappointing performance against Armorel, the Mohawks were looking to rebound Friday night as the visited the friendly confines of the Maynard High School gym. Getting off to a strong start, the Mohawks ran out to a 13-10 score by the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers responded in the second quarter, taking the frame 13-9 as they took a 23-22 lead into the locker room for the halftime intermission. But, the Mohawks came out of the break with new determination, taking the third quarter 15-9 to take a 37-32 lead going into the final frame.
Down the stretch the Tigers made a strong run as they took the fourth quarter 16-15, but it was too little too late for the Maynard squad as the Tribe notched the win.
Brewer's 19 point night included a 6 for 8 performance at the charity stripe, meanwhile also in double figures was Nicholas Harris with 12. Rounding out the scoring for the Mohawks were Logan Dixon and Quinton Mauldin with 6 points each while the team's lone sophomore, Peyton Mann, finished with 3.
As a team the Mohawks converted on 11 of 18 trips to the free throw line in posting the win.
With the win the Tribe improves to 1-2 overall, while Maynard fell to 1-4 on the season.
The Mohawks will next take part in the Invitational Tournament being played Dec. 1 to 5 at Holcomb High School. The Tribe is the seventh seed, and will play second seeded Bloomfield at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The winner will advance into the championship bracket, and will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, against the winner of the contest between Holcomb and Twin Rivers. The loser will move into the consolation bracket, and will play the loser of the contest between the Hornets and the Royals at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Teams in the upper half of the bracket include Bernie and Risco, and they'll face-off in the first round, The other two teams are Puxico and Campbell, and they'll play Monday in the first round as well.
The finals are set for Friday, Dec. 5, with the seventh place game set for 4 p.m., the consolation championship at 5:30, the third place game at 7 p.m. and the championship contest around 8:30.
The Mohawks will also be playing in the Pre-Holiday Tournament the following week, beginning Monday, Dec. 8, with the bracket yet to be determined.
The Piggott junior and seventh grade Mohawks visited the Gosnell Pirates in non-conference play on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and split on the day. The junior boys dropped their contest to the host squad, while the seventh grade stayed on a roll to notch their third win in a row.
The junior Mohawks dropped their contest to the 4A Pirates by a lopsided score of 51-29, as they fell to 0-3 on the season. The Gosnell squad came out early and jumped to a lead, extending it in all four quarters, as they cruised to the win.
Scoring by quarters had Gosnell up 12-6 after the first quarter, and ahead 24-9 at the break. They extended the lead to 41-23 by the end of the third period as they notched the non-conference victory over the young Tribe.
Leading the way for the Mohawks was Josh Lyman with 6, while Spencer Hardin finished with 5 and Brier Staples and Alex Gibson had 4 each. Leading the Pirates on the night was Jones with 15.
The seventh grade Mohawks moved to 3-0 on the season last Tuesday, beating Gosnell 31-27 in a non-conference road battle. Both teams featured strong defense on the night, but the Tribe was able to edge their hosts late to keep their record unblemished.
The Mohawks jumped out to a bit of an edge early, and led their hosts 8-6 after the first quarter. But, the Pirates responded and outscored the Tribe 10-6 in the second to make it a 16-14 Gosnell lead at the half. Neither team could mount much offense in the third, but the Mohawks edged their hosts 5-3 to tie the game at 19-19 entering the fourth.
Down the stretch the Mohawks held strong, outscoring their hosts 12-8 in the fourth quarter as they posted the win.
Holden Tarno and Ben Holcomb paced the Tribe with 8 points each. Tarno was also 3 for 4 on the night at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Michael Palmer had 6, Jackson Henfling had 5 and was 3 for 3 at the charity stripe and Cooper Harris finished with 4. Leading the way for the Gosnell squad was Kuykendall with 9 points in the losing effort.
On the game the Mohawks were 12 of 20 from the free throw line, while the Pirates converted on 7 of 15 from the line.
Maynard Junior Game
The junior Mohawks were back in action on Friday, Nov. 21, as they traveled to Maynard and dropped a 49-40 loss to the Tigers.
Scoring by quarters had the Tigers up 9-6 after the first quarter, and leading 23 to 17 at the halftime break. The Mohawks had a big third quarter, and rode the momentum to a 34-34 tie at the end of the third frame. But, the host team outscored the Mohawks 15-6 down the stretch the set the final score.
Leading the way for the Mohawks was Quentin Reeves with 14, while Hardin finished with 9 and Staples and Lyman had 8 each and Elijah Bellers converted on a free throw for a point. For the Tigers, McCleskey and Chaffin had 10 points each in the win.
With the loss the junior Mohawks fell to 0-4 overall.
