RHS Boys Drop Game to Bobcats
The Cougars suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 25, falling to the visiting Corning Bobcats, 73-61, in Rector. The teams battled in a back-and-forth contest for three frames before Corning was able to pull away in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats' Noah Bass scored 11 of his game-high 34 points in the final frame while the Cougars, in the midst of their worst shooting contest of the season, struggled at times to find their range. RHS entered the fourth quarter down just a single point, 51-50, but was outscored 22-11 in the key period. RHS was outpaced 16-6 in the final five minutes of the game.
"We struggled with our shots at different times tonight, but more so in the fourth quarter," Rector coach Matt Mills said following the game. "I thought we forced some bad shots in some of those stretches, but we weren't hitting much before then, either.
Corning started the fourth with a layup and pair of free throws to move ahead 55-50. Nick Hardin hit a three-pointer for the Cougars, but the visitors responded with a bucket inside. Mason McCluskey rebounded his own miss and scored on the putback underneath at the 5:12 mark for Rector, bringing the hosts back within two, 57-55. Corning would rattle off nine unanswered over the next three minutes to take control. The visitors went to the stripe three times in the final minute, each time making one of two, but Rector could not capitalize with a big shot when needed.
Corning led 17-16 after the first frame, but the teams entered halftime ties at 33-33.
Lawson Ford finished with 12 points for the Cougars. Hardin, 11 points, and Danny Hager, 10 points, also netted double figures for RHS. Also scoring for the Cougars were Houston Highfill 8, McCluskey 7, Chase Jackson 4, Garrett Buck 4, Chito Martinez 3 and Landen Crancer 2.
The Cougars were set to host Riverside in 2A-3 conference play Tuesday night. RHS will host its annual Hall of Fame Classic beginning Thursday, Dec. 4 and concluding Saturday, Dec. 6 in Rector.
The Junior Cougars fell in their meeting with Corning, 50-32.
Sam Simmons led Rector with 11 points on the night. Also scoring for the Junior Cougars were Kirk Beshears 6, Hunter McNeely 4, David Hatfield 4, Parker Bucy 3, Hunter Householder 2 and Shannon Patterson 2.
