Lady Cougars Edged by BIC
The Lady Cougars battled back to keep close with conference rival Buffalo Island Central Monday night in Monette, but Rector would eventually fall to the hosting Lady Mustangs, 36-32. The Lady Cougars held an 11-9 advantage through the first quarter, and were down by a bucket, 20-18, at intermission, but fell further back heading into the final frame. RHS managed just two points, on a jumper from Dominique Coln, in the third period, and saw BIC net eight points to move to a 28-20 lead.
The Rector cause wasn't helped any by the large difference in opportunities at the stripe. BIC made 11 of 15 trips to the line, while the Lady Cougars had just two free throws, missing both.
Defensively, Rector has shown a higher energy level since the holiday break. Coach Matt Dean says his team has put an emphasis on disrupting opposing offenses.
"We've played three games since the holidays and have kept all three teams in the 40s and below," Dean said. "The down side to go along with that is we haven't shot the ball well during that time and have gone 1-2. If we keep at it like we have been on defense, I think our shots will start falling again and we can win some of these close games like this one."
Matison Dean paced the Lady Cougars with 10 points in the game with BIC. She and Tori Hill, who finished with eight points, got Rector started early with precision perimeter shooting in the first quarter. Dean sank two triples and Hill added one in the opening quarter assault. Colby Lynch also scored eight points for the Lady Cougars. Marla Crancer, Coln and Sophi Adams finished with two points each to round out the RHS scoring.
Karoline Thomas led BIC with 10 points on the night.
RHS fell to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in 2A-3 conference play with the loss.
The Junior Lady Cougars fell to BIC, 41-11. Rector scored two points in each of the first three quarters and trailed 28-6 heading into the fourth.
Mylessa Gant paced the Junior Lady Cougars with four points. Jackie Beck added three points on the night. Gracie Patterson and Kim Lamar each scored two points for Rector.
The Seventh Grade Lady Cougars secured their first win of the season, defeating BIC 7-5. Statistics for the contest were unavailable, but Rector improved to 1-2 on the year with the win.
The Lady Cougars are set to visit Hillcrest beginning at 5 p.m. Friday. RHS will visit Marked Tree beginning at 6 p.m. on Jan. 12 and visit Earle at 6 p.m. Jan. 15.
