Chase Jackson goes in for a layup in recent action. The Cougars will be on the road at Earle Friday night.

Rector's Lawson Ford stopped his dribble and elevated for a 15-foot jumper, launching the ball as the final horn sounded in the Cougars' meeting with the hosting Walnut Ridge Bobcats Friday night. The last second shot, which came on a broken play, sailed true, giving Rector a thrilling 58-56 victory on the night.

"That was a big shot; huge," RHS coach Matt Mills said of the bucket. "It's not the way we drew it up, but we'll take it, that's for sure."

Senior Nick Hardin had a big night for the Cougars, netting a game-best 25 points in the victory, including seven treys.

"I though he (Hardin) played like a senior for us," Mills said. "He stepped up and played real well. Those threes were crucial in helping us win that one.

"Walnut Ridge is tougher than they've been in 10 years. We needed to play well to go in there and win, and that's exactly what we did. I thought all our guys played extremely hard."

Ford joined Hardin in double figures with 16 points in the win. Also scoring for the Cougars were Garrett Buck 4, Danny Hager 4, Landen Crancer 3, Chase Jackson 2 and Houston Highfill 2.

Wilson led the Bobcats with 20 points in the loss.

Walnut Ridge led 19-12 after the first quarter. The Cougars battled back in the second stanza, in which seven Rector players scored, to take a 31-24 advantage into intermission. The Cougars held a 45-41 lead heading into the final frame.

Kirk Beshears had a monster performance with 21 points, but the Junior Cougars were unable to overcome Walnut Ridge in junior high action Friday, falling 43-34. Hunter McNeely added nine for Rector, and Sam Simmons and Kale Hardin scored two points each on the night.

The hosts led throughout: 14-1; 24-15 and 29-21.
