The Arkansas Activities Association announced on Thursday, Jan. 15, Piggott High School will be hosting the 3A state volleyball tournament in late October. The school district had bid to host the tournament earlier this year, and the official announcement of sites was released last week by the AAA.

"I am excited for the community, school and students that we have been given an opportunity to host the 3A volleyball state tournament in the fall," noted Piggott Superintendent Charlie Powell of the announcement. "Several community members have already been in contact with the school to show their support and indicate they're willing to donate their time."

The announcement of Piggott for the 3A site means the Lady Mohawks, perennial participants in the state tourney, will not be required to travel for this year's early rounds and will have the advantage of playing on their home court.

The schedule calls for three early rounds, with games being played Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 27, 28 and 29 at PHS. The finals for all of the classifications will be played on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015 at Hot Springs.

"Being the first time that this school has hosted a state tournament, it has given us a great chance to showcase our school and community to the rest of the state," Powell added. "Hopefully it will give us the opportunity to host other regional or state tournaments at Piggott in the future."

Last year the state tournament for the Lady Mohawks was held at Harrison, which has hosted many of the recent 3A tournaments at their parks and recreation facility. Meanwhile, Harding Academy hosted the previous year at their facility at Searcy. There was no bid for hosting the 7A tournament, while Greenwood, Valley View and Mena will host the 6A, 5A and 4A tourneys.

The AAA also announced sites for basketball state and regional's, with Buffalo Island Central named to host the 2A and Manila the 3A regional tournaments for both boys and girls. Meanwhile, the 2A state tournament will be at Pangburn, and the 3A state basketball tournament at Cossatot River, located southwest of Hot Springs near the Oklahoma state line.

The regional softball and baseball sites were also named, with Tuckerman hosting the 2A baseball and softball while the 3A regional will be held at the Harrison Parks facility and hosted by Bergman. The state 2A baseball tournament will be at Marked Tree, while the softball tournament will be at Norphlet. The 3A baseball tourney is at Genoa Central and the softball tournament will also be played at Harrison Parks hosted by the Bergman Panthers.
