Junior Mohawks Split Conference Games
The Piggott junior Mohawks split their conference game in the past week, beating the Hoxie Mustangs on the road 38-33 last Tuesday, then falling to Corning 45-39 Friday night at PHS for homecoming.
The junior boys visited Hoxie last Tuesday and outscored their hosts in every quarter en route to a five point win. Scoring by quarters had the Mohawks up 8-7 after the first quarter, and up 19-15 at the half. The Mustangs squeezed the Tribe's lead to just 2 by the end of the second, as they trailed the Mohawks 24-22 entering the final frame. But the young Mohawks continue to show improvement, as they took the fourth 14-11 to set the final score.
Spencer Hardin led the team with 12 while Dylan Bellers was close behind with 11 and Trey Gossett finished with 8 in the win. Top scorer for Hoxie was Keifer Wilson with 16 to lead all scorers.
The junior boys returned to the friendly confines of the PHS gym Friday night, and came within a Bobcat's whisker of leading the Tribe to a sweep of Corning as the seventh grade squad had already won their game.
Hardin once again had a strong game, and led all scorers on the night with 17 as the Tribe notched the conference win.
Scoring by quarters had the Tribe up 9-6 after the first, and ahead 13-11 at the break. But, the Bobcats outscored the Tribe 15-10 in the third, and 13-7 in the fourth, to set the final at 45-39.
Along with Hardin's 17, the Mohawks got 7 points from Elijah Bellers, 5 from Quinton Reaves, 4 from Brett Burns and Trey Gossett and 2 more from Dylan Bellers. Matthew Ahrent led the Bobcats with 11 in the win.
The junior boys will wrap up conference play this week, and will be set for their upcoming district tournament. They were slated to visit Manila Tuesday evening and will host Osceola on Friday at PHS.
