Lady Mohawks Drop Conference Games
The Piggott Lady Mohawks goal of finishing fourth in 3A-3 this year suffered a setback Monday night, as the Tribe dropped a five point home loss to Manila. Last Thursday they took on the front-running Corning Lady Bobcats and dropped that game 58-39
The Lady Mohawks completed their home-and-away conference set with Corning Thursday evening at PHS, dropping a 19 point decision. Scoring by quarters had the Bobcats up 24-14, and ahead 41-23 at the break. The two teams each scored 7 in the third period, as the Lady Bobcats enjoyed a 48-30 lead entering the final frame. And the two squads continue to battle evenly down the stretch, as the Corning girls outscored the Tribe 10-9 in the fourth to set the final score.
Bailey Pollard was the only Lady Mohawk in double figures as she had 10, while MaKalia Beck finished with 7, Grayson Murray had 4, Quest Emerson and Devyn Staples finished with 4 each, Micah Hobbs had 3, McKenzie Hopkins and Alexa DeHart contributed another 2 each and Shelby Pruett-Chavez finished with a free-throw. Leading the way for Corning was Becca Young with 20.
Looking for their second win of the year over the Lady Lions, and a chance at fourth in conference, the Mohawks hosted Manila Monday night and fell 52-47. On the night the difference was at the free-throw line, as the Lions converted on 29 of 40 trips to the charity stripe while the Lady Mohawks shot 50 percent, as they made 13 of 26 attempts.
The Lady Lions jumped out the early lead Monday, and were up 14-8 after the first quarter. The Mohawks then outscored their visitors 17-12, as the score stood at 26-25 in favor of Manila at the break.
The third quarter was also a tight affair, with the Lady Lions edging the Mohawks 15-14 in the frame to take a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter. And, down the stretch they extended their lead to 5 as they took the win 52-47.
Staples was the only Mohawk in double figures with 10, while Pollard and Hopkins finished with 7 each, DeHart had 6, Beck finished with 5, Chavez and Murray had 4 each, and Micah Hobbs and Colby Crossfield finished with 2 each. Leading the way for Corning was Taylor Harmon with 21.
The junior Lady Mohawks also dropped their games to Corning and Manila in the past week. Last week they fell 33-19 to the Lady Bobcats with Emilee Seegraves leading the team in scoring with 5 points. On Monday they dropped a 46-29 decision to the Lady Lions led by Hannah Powell with 11 and Reagan Ralph with 9.
The Tribe was slated to visit Hayti Tuesday, and is slated to wrap up the conference schedule this week with a home set with Osceola on Thursday. As the junior girls move into district tournament play the senior girls will close out the regular season with two home sets with the senior boys. On Tuesday, Feb. 10, they're scheduled to host Walnut Ridge and on Thursday, Feb. 12, the Rector Cougars will visit PHS for senior night.
