Tribe Stumbles in League Play

The Mohawk basketball squad dropped a pair of regular season games last week as they wrapped up the conference schedule. Tuesday evening the Tribe was slated to host Walnut Ridge in a twin set with the senior girls, and Thursday evening both squads will close out the regular season with senior night at PHS against the Rector Cougars.


The Mohawks took on the Lions of Manila last Tuesday, and came out on the short end of a 59-57 decision. Actually, the Tribe battled-back in the late stages to make it a close ballgame with Manila, after trailing 41-32 entering the fourth quarter.

Leading the way for the Mohawks was Brayden Brewer with 17, while Nick McKinnie finished with 11 and Nicholas Harris was also in double figures with 10. The Mohawks also got 9 points from Beau Jett in the loss, and Quinton Mauldin contributed another 8. Top scorer for the Lions was Davis with 17.


Friday, Feb. 6, the Mohawks closed out the conference portion of their schedule with a home set against Osceola. On the night the Seminole got a 32 point performance from Tevin James as they took the contest 70-57.

Leading the Mohawks in scoring on the night was Harris with 18, while Jett finished with 12 and Brewer was also in double figures with 10. As a team the Mohawks were 15 of 19 from the free throw line, while the Seminole shot a dismal 5 of 15 from the charity stripe.

The 3A-3 district tournament for the senior teams will be played next week at Manila High School, and the Mohawk boy's team will enter the bracket as the #4 seed. Their first round game will be played at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, as they take on the #5 seeded Corning Bobcats. With a win the Tribe will move into the semi-finals, and an automatic bid to the regional, and will take on Rivercrest at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Hoxie and Osceola will face-off in the other first round game on Monday evening, with the winner to face the second-seeded Manila Lions in the other semi-final on Tuesday evening. The district championship game for the boys is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday, Feb. 19, at Manila High.
