'Hounds Fall in Second Round of District
Marmaduke led early but could't find an answer for Marked Tree's Laquentin Miles as he came off the bench to score 40 points helping the Indians to a 75-60 win in the quarter-finals of the 2A-3 district tournament in Lepanto this past Friday.
Eddie Page gave Marmaduke a 2-0 lead with two free throws before Cameron Mitchell drilled a three-pointer and Tirek Young made a layup for Marked Tree to make it 5-2. Page scored on an ally-op dunk, Tyler Vowell put back an offensive rebound, Page hit a jumper and Hayden Winberry scored inside to make it 10-5 Greyhounds. Young hit back to back jumpers for Marked Tree around a Winberry three-ball to make the score 13-9 Marmaduke. Winberry hit one of two free throws before Young and Page exchanged three-pointers to make it 17-12 Greyhounds. Winberry converted a three-point play and Page hit two free throws for Marmaduke to make it 22-12 as Miles hit a three-pointer late making it 22-15 Marmaduke after the first quarter.
Marked Tree's 7-0 run start the second quarter tied the game at 22 as Terry Carter hit two free throws and Miles hit back to back baskets adding a free throw after being fouled on the second basket. Page canned a three-pointer for the Greyhounds and Carter put back an offensive rebound for the Indians to making the score 25-24 Marmaduke. Winberry scored inside, Page hit two free throws and Winberry hit one of two free throws give the Greyhounds a 30-24 lead. Miles hit one of two free shots before Mitchell and Young had back to back steals and layups for Marked Tree to cut the lead to 30-29. Page scored inside for Marmaduke to make it 32-29 only to see Miles make back to back layups and Carter convert an old-school three-point play to give the Indians a 36-32 lead at the half.
Winberry scored inside and hit two free throws around two free throws from Page to put Marmaduke up 38-36 early in the third quarter. Miles' back to back buckets put Marked Tree up 40-38 before Page tied it at 40 with an inside basket for the Greyhounds. Miles converted an old-fashioned three-pointer giving Marked Tree a 43-40 lead and a lead they wouldn't give up the rest of the night. D'Angelo Griffin Daniel and Page traded baskets before Miles and Page traded baskets to make it 47-44 Marked Tree. Miles stretched the lead to 49-44 with two free throws before the quarter ended.
A three-ball from Winberry cut the Marked Tree lead to 49-47 only to see Daniel's two free throws push the lead back to 51-47. Winberry and Daniel traded jumpers making it 53-49 and Page hit two free throws and scored inside around a steal and layup from Miles to make the score 55-53 Indians. Marked Tree reeled off the next 15 points to blow the game open. Carter started the run with a basket inside, Miles was good on two free throws as was Carter to make it 61-53. Miles scored the next seven by hitting one of two free throws, a layup off the fast break and finishing with four consecutive free throws to make it 68-53 Marked Tree. Lucas Dixon scored inside for Marmaduke before Miles converted a three-point play and scored again off the fast break to make it 73-55 Indians. Winberry scored inside and Page drained a three-pointer making it 73-60 before Braiden Hall scored inside for Marked Tree setting the final at 75-60.
Page led Marmaduke in scoring with 33 points followed by Winberry with 23 points.
Miles topped all scorers with 40 points as Carter and Young had 11 points each for Marked Tree.
Marmaduke won their opening round game 60-32 over CRA. Winberry and Page scored 16 and 15 points respectively.
