Lady Hounds Roll into Regional Play
Marmaduke hit 12 three-pointers in the first half to build a 43-25 lead at the break on their way to a 76-57 win over Buffalo Island Central (BIC) in the 2A-3 district tournament played in Lepanto. The Marmaduke girls then claimed the 2A-3 district title this past Monday by defeating EPC 76-56. Bopp led the Lady Greyhounds with 31 points as Burgess added 15 points. Wednesday they beat Pangburn 83-38 in the first round of the regional at Monette, qualifying for the 2A state tournament.
Allison Hampton and Shelby Blackburn opened the game with back to back three-balls for Marmaduke for a quick 6-0 lead. Madison Greathouse put back an offensive rebound to get BIC on the board making it 6-2. Sidnee Bopp and Karo Thomas traded baskets before Bopp and Greathouse traded three-pointers to make the score 11-7 Marmaduke. Bopp and Kelsey McCoy hit back to back three-pointers for the Lady Greyhounds as Hannah Poe answered by canning back to back three-pointers to make it 17-13 Marmaduke. Hampton drilled her second three of the quarter and Poe hit two free throws to make the score 20-15 Lady Greyhounds at the end of one.
Marmaduke opened the second quarter with a 15-0 run to take command of the game. Blackburn, Abby Meredith and Hampton hit consecutive three-pointers to make it 29-15. Bopp hit one of two free throws before Madison Price hit a runner in the lane and followed with a three-ball to make 35-15. Thomas scored back to back buckets for the Lady Mustangs to cut the lead to 35-19. McCoy hit two of three free throws after being fouled attempting a three-pointer and Price drained a three-pointer making it 40-19 Marmaduke. Owens got two free throws to fall for BIC before Hampton drilled her fourth three- ball of the half for Marmaduke to make it 43-21 Lady Greyhounds. BIC got two free throws from Poe and an inside basket from Thomas to make it 43-25 Marmaduke at the half.
BIC cut the lead to 43-30 as Thomas hit two free throws and Owens canned a three-pointer to start the third quarter. McCoy scored inside for Marmaduke before Owens canned another three-ball to make the score 45-33 Lady Greyhounds. Cally Burgess scored inside for the Lady Greyhounds and Owens hit three free throws for BIC after being fouled attempting a three-pointer to make it 47-36 Marmaduke. Burgess and Jordan Mays scored back to back for the Lady Greyhounds making it 51-36. Owens scored inside for BIC only to see Marmaduke score three consecutive baskets with Burgess scoring inside and Bopp making back to back buckets to increase the lead to 57-38. Wildy and Owens drilled back to back three-pointers for BIC making it 57-44 before Bopp hit one of two free throws and Price hit a running jumper to make it 60-44 at the end of three quarters of play.
Thomas opened the final quarter with two free throws for BIC only to see Bopp answer with a basket to make it 62-46 Marmaduke. Thomas scored inside and Owens hit two free throws to make the score 62-50 before the Lady Greyhounds reeled off nine straight points to go up 71-50. Price hit four straight free throws, Mays added two free throws as Price added another free shot and McCoy hit two more free throws for Marmaduke. Poe drained a three-ball for BIC and Mays hit one of two free shots for the Lady Greyhounds to make it 72-53 Lady Greyhounds. Owens and Burgess traded baskets before Poe and Burgess traded baskets setting the final score at 76-57 Marmaduke.
Three players reached double digits for the Lady Greyhounds as Bopp led with 16 points followed by Price and Hampton with 15 and 12 points respectively.
The Lady Hounds were slated to take on the winner of the Sloan-Hendrix/Marked Tree game at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at BIC.
