Lady Mohawks Fall Cold in First Round Match-Up
Cold shooting and a hot opponent combined for disaster as the Piggott Lady Mohawks took on Osceola in their first round district tournament game Thursday at Manila. And, in what turned out to be a low scoring affair the Tribe was eliminated by a final of 46-30.
Postponed due to Winter Storm Octavia, the first round of the 3A-3 district tourney was held three days late with ice and snow still covering the Manila High School parking lot. And, as the Lady Mohawks and Lady Seminole played the first game in the bracket the Tribe's shooting was as cold as the weather outside.
Throughout a sluggish first quarter the Mohawks scattered 8 points among four players, while Osceola jumped out to a 13-8 lead behind 6 in the quarter from Imani Fletcher. Coach Barry DeHart's squad responded somewhat in the second quarter, as Kenzie Hopkins scored 4 of her 8 points in the frame. The Mohawks finished with 8 in the period, meanwhile, limited to a pair of three-pointers, and a field goal, Osceola was also held to 8 in the frame as they led 21-16 at the break.
As the second half got underway both teams continued to have issues scoring, as the Seminole took the frame 11-8 to take a 32-24 advantage into the fourth quarter. And, in the final frame the Seminole got several fast break baskets, including 8 in the quarter by Jammiyah Allen, as they outscored the Tribe 14-6 to set the final score.
Hopkins led the Mohawks with 8, while Alexa DeHart finished with 6 and was a perfect 2 for 2 from the free throw line on the game. Bailey Pollard finished with 4, as did MaKalia Beck and Devyn Staples who had a pair of field goals in the first half. The normally sure-handed Staples also had a shaky night at the charity stripe, going 0 for 4 from the free throw line. Rounding out the Piggott scoring were Shelby Chavez and Quest Emerson with 2 points each. As a team the Lady Mohawks were 2 of 6 from the free throw line.
Fletcher led all scorers with 15 for Osceola, while Allen and Kyra Guy were also in double figures. As a team the Lady Seminole converted on 6 of 8 trips to the charity stripe.
In the other first round game on Thursday the Hoxie Lady Mustangs upset the host Lady Lions of Manila. On Saturday Hoxie and Osceola fell to Rivercrest and Corning in the semi-finals, and Monday night the Lady Colts pounded the Lady Bobcats 70-59 for the district tourney championship. All four of the semi-finalists also qualified for this week's 3A Regional tournament, also being played at Manila High School.
