Lady Greyhounds Roll Into State Semi's
The Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds punched their ticket to the state 2A semi-finals Tuesday afternoon, pounding the Lady Bears of Spring Hill 72-36 in the state tournament at Pangburn. The Lady 'Hounds were never threatened on the game, jumping to an early lead and watching the clock run throughout the fourth period due to the mercy rule.
The win set-up a showdown with Westside, Johnson County, as they beat Foreman 70-42 on Monday evening to advance. In the bottom half of the girls bracket Marked Tree saw their season end at the hands of England, as the Lady Lions eliminated the Lady Indians easily by a final score of 64-31. England will now take on the winner of Tuesday's late game between Mineral Springs and the Lady Mustangs of Buffalo Island Central at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 11. The two winners will be playing in the state championship game at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Hot Springs.
In the boys bracket, two of the four 2A-3 teams made it out of the first round, with EPC falling the Bigelow as the Warriors were eliminated. Meanwhile, Marked Tree beat Conway St. Joseph 58-50, but then fell to England in the second round Monday night by a final of 50-48.
Buffalo Island Central advanced out of the first round with a 70-40 win over Eureka Springs, and then got by Mineral Springs Tuesday afternoon in the second round 67-55. They'll take on the winner of Tuesday evening's contest between Junction City and Bigelow in one of the state semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the Earle Bulldogs also advanced out of the first round as they pounded Western Yell County by a score of 93-55. They took on the Augusta Red Devils Tuesday afternoon, with the winner to face England in the semi's. At last report the Bulldogs enjoyed a large lead.
The winners of the semi-finals will square-off for the 2A boys state championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Hot Springs.
In the 3A state tournament at Cossatot River High School, all of the 3A-3 teams were eliminated in the early rounds of play.
In the boy's bracket, the Manila Lions were edged by the Prescott Curlywolves by 10 points, as they fell 49-39. Meanwhile, the Rivercrest Colts made it out of the first round by beating McGhee 82-76, but then fell to Mayflower 82-67. In the lower half of the bracket Episcopal beat Charleston 57-41 and they'll take on Mayflower in this weekend's final in Hot Springs.
In the girl's bracket, the Rivercrest Lady Colts was the only team to advance to the state tournament from 3A-3, and they beat Fordyce 61-58 in the first round. But, the Colts ran into the squad from Jessieville in the second round, and dropped a 68-50 decision to end their season. Jessieville went on to lose to Valley Springs in one of the semi-finals, while Greenland eliminated Harding Academy in the other. This sets up a final between Greenland and Valley Springs this weekend in Hot Springs.
